This phenomenon has several names: crepuscular rays, sun rays, God's rays or the Fingers of God. I have always known it to be called "Jacob's Ladder".

For a book that had nothing much to it, this was memorably called "God light" in 'The Bridges of Madison County' by Robert James Waller.

Clouds had moved up in the west, splitting the sun into rays that splayed in several directions. He looked out the window above the sink and said, "God light. Calendar companies love it. So do religious magazines."
