Subject: Bus Ride Renewal Challenge

Posted by: Terry
Date: Mar 16 10

While the replacement of low-ranked quizzes is a continuing goal, preparation of extra quizzes to introduce variety for the tourists is also important now that the Bus Ride is well-established. Some tourists have been around the world over ten times, and even nice quizzes get repetitive. The lowest-ranked quiz currently used for the tour has a ranking that is roughly in the top third of all quizzes, so replacement is not an urgent matter, but we would still like to have new quizzes of a suitable quality to use as replacements, to provide a bit of diversity for those players who have played every day since the beginning, and who have probably memorised the answers to the current quizzes.

If you create a new quiz on a Bus Ride country, get it placed online, and have it place within a reasonable ranking, it may be rotated in to provide a more diverse program. Should your quiz manage a higher ranking than the current entry, it could become the permanent fixture, waiting for a future challenger. As an added bonus, we have modified the ratings system to give all quizzes in our rotation a ratings bump.

Feel free to use this thread to also "claim" a country so that you don't duplicate someone else's effort, and make sure to follow along with our later posts and updates to make sure that everything is in order. We look forward to seeing what you can come up with!

This link will show you what the ranking is for each of our current country quizzes.

I'm guessing that in the two years since the original post was made, some of these countries have gained additional quizzes. Can anyone put together an updated list?

I did check to find that Guinea-Bissau has only one quiz, so I'll take that one next

Oops == seems to be a bug in the server at the moment as there does not seem to be a way to select a category when trying to create a quiz.

The list at the top of the board is up to date country-wise. It's periodically updated.

Sounds like a browser issue. Go to the subcategory you want to create the quiz in and try to do it from there.

There's Zambia.

As Taz said, make sure your internet browser is fully updated.

I didn't have any problems creating my quiz template and copying my stuff into it. In fact, I was able to submit the quiz just now. (Let's hope it will be satisfactory and qualify for the Bus Ride). I am finding writing quizzes about nations I am not familiar with, especially African nations, to be rather fun!

When the inspiration strikes on Bus Ride quizzes (for me at least) I find them very enjoyable, especially when I only started with a fleeting interest in it.

So I'm not the only one who finds it addictive to find out interesting stuff about countries I had barely even heard of. :)

Thanks to all the recent Bus Ride quiz writers. I am checking their progress as far as level of difficulty and rankings, and will be adding those that look suitable. Currently shown as not having a second quiz, but with a quiz online and waiting for ranking, are the countries of Lesotho, Mozambique, Solomon Islands and Zambia. This still leaves quite a few countries with only a single usable quiz.

Don't forget that you are also welcome to write on a country that is not listed, but your quiz will have to rank higher than one of the two already listed in my spreadsheet in order to displace it. So if you have a passionate desire to write about a country that is not listed, go for it!

The one I submitted the other day is for Guinea-Bissau, which is good since it is on the list! I hope it will be acceptable!

I am wondering if there is any point in doing as asked at the top and posting here to say that you are going to work on a quiz for a particular country.

There is never a problem having more quizzes for a country, the biggest problem is too few quizzes for countries. The more quizzes the more LT can choose from and the cream always rises to the top.

It would be a good idea to register your intentions, so others who take the time can see it. The problem arises when people don't go back to read through the whole thread, so don't know that something is in progress. But two quizzes is better than none! There are also some very old posts promising to write for a country, which have produced nothing yet. This thread will work most constructively if participants (a) read through the last few pages to see what countries still listed in the header have actually got someone already working on a quiz; (b) post their plans to minimise duplication of efforts; (c) proceed to complete their quiz in a timely fashion; (d) let other authors know when it is online (I will see it anyway, but posting it here will make others aware that the country has a quiz, even if it is still listed at the top).

I do not remove titles from the header (or rather, ask Kyle to do it for me) as soon as a new quiz goes online because I do want to see that it is well received. I have absolutely no intention of casting aspersions on any of the recent offerings, all of which I have enjoyed playing, but we have had some quizzes written for this challenge which ended up with a ranking around 80,000. While the effort is appreciated, that is not a quiz that will work well on the Bus Ride, where players are even harsher judges than the average, especially if they found it foo hard to get enough questions right to count the day. Of course, many of them will use the Wikipedia link, which makes many questions much easier than is the case if you are working from memory, so I don't worry too much about the apparent level of difficulty (but an insanely difficult quiz will probably have a poor ranking, anyway).

Visitors to the Authors Lounge, I would like to encourage you to play and rate the quizzes posted in this thread as candidates. The sooner they get 20 ratings, the sooner we know where we stand. Even if Geography isn't your thing, it's good preparation for future Bus Ride visits.

Here is the link to my recent Zambia quiz:

http://www.funtrivia.com/trivia-quiz/Geography/The-Republic-of-Zambia-360359.html

Guinea-Bissau will no doubt be online in a day or two.

While I agree that two quizzes on a county is better than none, it would seem that one quiz on each of two different countries would be better since the initial objective is to get all countries at least adequately covered. In an effort to reduce duplication of work I'll make one more effort at posting intention -- I am going to write SIERRA LEONE next :)

Just one more comment on this browser problem. I have a brande new computer running Windows 7 and the latest Internet Explorer, so this is not an updating problem. However, when I click on "Select a Category" it takes me to the top animals page with no options. Any suggestions?

Marc
