Subject: Bus Ride Renewal Challenge

Posted by: Terry
Date: Mar 16 10

While the replacement of low-ranked quizzes is a continuing goal, preparation of extra quizzes to introduce variety for the tourists is also important now that the Bus Ride is well-established. Some tourists have been around the world over ten times, and even nice quizzes get repetitive. The lowest-ranked quiz currently used for the tour has a ranking that is roughly in the top third of all quizzes, so replacement is not an urgent matter, but we would still like to have new quizzes of a suitable quality to use as replacements, to provide a bit of diversity for those players who have played every day since the beginning, and who have probably memorised the answers to the current quizzes.

If you create a new quiz on a Bus Ride country, get it placed online, and have it place within a reasonable ranking, it may be rotated in to provide a more diverse program. Should your quiz manage a higher ranking than the current entry, it could become the permanent fixture, waiting for a future challenger. As an added bonus, we have modified the ratings system to give all quizzes in our rotation a ratings bump.

Feel free to use this thread to also "claim" a country so that you don't duplicate someone else's effort, and make sure to follow along with our later posts and updates to make sure that everything is in order. We look forward to seeing what you can come up with!

This link will show you what the ranking is for each of our current country quizzes.

United Kingdom covers Great Britain AND Northern Island.

Great Britain covers England, Scotland and Wales.

I am English, but also a Brit. An Englishman or woman comes ONLY from England.

Generally, the safest expression to use is a Brit or British. There are exceptions of course.

Someone I know who was born in England but grew up in South Africa insists that one never says just "Britain" - you must say Great Britain or the United Kingdom - but I see just plain "Britain" in print all the time, not just in the American press. Wondering about that.

If you call us British you will offend the least number of people. If you refer to a Scot as being English expect a great deal of grief. Ditto the Welsh. Of course you may find some people from Northern Ireland who hate being called British but they'll tell you pretty quickly, assuming you're still alive to hear it. ;)

Of course we English don't care what you call us, we know "that despite all temptations to belong to other nations... it is greatly to (our) credit to remain an Englishman." Or woman. ;)

But the Prince who would be King of England is the Prince of Wales, not the Prince of the United Kingdom or the Prince of Britain or the Prince of England. There is no Prince of England. Why not? And why not a Prince of Scotland while we're about?

And all the rest of the titles seem like they make them up as they go along, whoever "they" are. Let's bring back "King of the Britons". And maybe the Bretons, too. Graham Chapman wore the title well.

The King of England is also the King of Wales, of Scotland, and of Northern Ireland. And is more properly known as King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Or he will be when he succeeds.

The title "Prince of Wales" was first given in 1301 to Edward of Caernarfon (the future Edward II), son of Edward I, and was awarded in response to Llywelyn ap Gruffydd who when fighting the English had called himself the Prince of Wales.

The eldest son of the monarch is usually given this title; so far there has not been a Princess of Wales by birth, presumably because they were always holding out for a male heir. It will be interesting to see how that changes when the new laws of primogeniture, i.e. eradicating the preference for males, come into effect.

Prince Charles *is* a prince of England and a prince of Scotland by birth and as such he is called Prince Charles; the title Prince of Wales is usually added to that but in south-west England his title as Duke of Cornwall is used. In Scotland he is Prince Charles, Duke of Rothesay.

As for other titles, some are ancient, some are indeed created to suit the circumstances, 'twas ever thus.

This "Can of Worms" will never be closed. We Brits have far too much history behind us. Titles go back into the mists of time. The Prince of Wales has many other titles too.

Aaaooow, aren't we grand, sitting on the settee, having a spot of tea.
If there's one thing I love about England, it's HIGH TEA!
A friend and I were privileged to be on the last crossing of the QEII from Southampton to NY several years ago, and I've been on larger, smaller, newer and older ships, but the QEII was the best of all ships. We often skipped our late dinner because we were all filled up with scones, clotted cream and jam, teensy elegant sandwiches, and wonderful pastries, and good strong hot tea! My Godson flew in and treated us to high tea at Harrod's one afternoon - what a fabulous place, and just before Christmas. I'll never forget it. One week in London was definitely not enough!

And youse guys can call us Yanks, but don't say that to a southerner! And if you're in NYC, don't say that to any fans of the other NY teams. We got our own can of woims here, I guess everyone does. Would you believe some southerners still call it 'The Wawa of Nothren Aggression'?
O, and size does matter, TX tried so hard to keep AK out so they wouldn't be second largest. Our smallest state makes up for it by having the longest name. And most Yanks have no clew what the US possessions and territories are...or even where they are.

So what would be a reasonable rank for this challenge?

If you look at the current quizzes (using the link in the header), you can see what is currently there. For countries with no current suitable replacement, as listed in the header, I will take anything that ranks in the top 50,000 or so, but would prefer a higher ranking. For the others, you have to beat either the current one or the spare. If you send me a message asking about a specific country, I can look up what those numbers are for that country on my spreadsheet.

I have just finished running a review of the rankings of all current and reserve quizzes. A number of reserve quizzes have had their rankings drift lower (as is inevitable with all the wonderful new quizzes going online), so making it to the reserve list for them is not all that difficult. Getting a quiz that makes reserve status for the next rotation qualifies for the Pangalactic challenge.

I am not changing the list in the header, but am happy to let anyone know the ranking of our current reserve quiz if they ask about a specific country. There are fewer countries with two really really good quizzes than there are countries with a reserve that could be used, but could be bettered. Some countries not shown there have a quiz I am willing to use if nothing better appears, but which I am sure could be replaced by a quiz from a keen author.

So, the list in the in body of the original post is not up-to-date? What about the linked document?

The link to current quizzes on the ride is live, and accurate - it updates with each weekly ranking. It does not, however, have any information about my list of quizzes that could be used to rotate and provide variety for players. The header has a list of countries for which there is NO acceptable second quiz.

The list in the header is accurate in that it shows the countries that have no acceptable second quiz. There are also, now, some countries which have a quiz that I had judged to be acceptable, but whose current ranking is lower than I would like to see. They are still acceptable, just easier to knock off than some others, if you want to write a quiz.

Any country can be written on, and all new quizzes are checked to see if they would make an appropriate addition to the tour. That list is only provided so you will know that a quiz on one of those countries is guaranteed to be included, at least as a rotation reserve,if it gets an acceptable ranking in the top 50,000 or better.

Does the quiz have to be in Geography? I mean, what should the quiz focus on?

The quiz certainly does not need to be in Geography - there are quizzes on the country's history, national foods, holiday celebrations, famous people, popular tourist sites, etc. already there. You can write for any appropriate category that will give players a sense of your country, and put it in the appropriate category according to its subject matter. If you want to focus on cultural aspects you could consider the World Country Specific categories; if it is more focused you might want to use History, Geography, People - it really depends on the quiz you want to write. I try to check anything that looks remotely possible when it comes online, but you could come back here and post a message just to make sure I don't miss yours for any reason.
