Meryl Streep as Lindy Chamberlain in "Evil Angels". Noone but an Australian should be allowed to play an Australian ! Reply #22. Jun 30 11, 2:32 AM |

Any accent that Sharon Stone does is poor especially in that movie where she adopted a little African American boy. TERRIBLE ACTOR!! Reply #23. Jul 04 11, 6:54 AM |

Tezza, is that the movie in which she has that great line "The dingos ate my baby"? If so, it was called 'A Cry in the Dark' in North America and Europe. I agree with you. The Australian accent is difficult to replicate. Streep's didn't flow! (Although, as an actor I always found the South African accent the hardest to produce with any degree of accuracy. Makes me glad I wasn't cast in more than one Atholl Fugard play!) Reply #24. Jul 09 11, 6:21 PM |

Sean Connery is from Scotland, so how would he have a 'terrible' Scottish accent? Reply #26. Jul 10 11, 10:26 AM |

Maybe Sister Seagull isn't familiar with the atrocious sounds-like-the-speaker-has-a-mouthful-of-porrige G;asgow accent. Reply #28. Jul 10 11, 2:45 PM |

Could be that's the case, Cym. Atrocious?? You may have hit the nail on the head with the 'mouthful-of-porridge' description, but because my dad was Scottish, I don't share your opinion of the accent. The Celtic languages (Welsh included) are gutteral and not all that pleasing to the ear. But I do enjoy listening to someone who has a wee brogue to his or her speech. Reply #29. Jul 10 11, 5:03 PM |

Kevin Costner in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. And to follow up an American not even *attempting* an accent as Robin Hood, they have Sean 'mushy-mouth' Connery as King Richard Lionheart with a lovely Scottish accent. Reply #30. Jul 10 11, 10:38 PM |

Make that a million and one votes for Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins. I wondered the same thing, why Renée Zellweger was cast as Bridget Jones. `It's not as though we're short of home-grown actresses - are we? Reply #32. Aug 12 11, 4:33 PM |

The worst movie as far as accents go has to be the 1964 epic, "Fall of the Roman Empire." The casting director should have been shot. Most of the actors are British, and speak with proper British accents. The emperor Marcus Aurelius, for example, is played by Alec Guiness, and he turns in his usual fine performance. However, his son, Commodus, is played by Christopher Plummer, a Canadian, and his adopted son, Livius, by Stephen Boyd, an American. To further complicate matters, their sister, Lucilla, is played by Sophia Loren, an Italian. In the scenes where these actors appear together, it sounds ike the Tower of Babel. Reply #34. Sean Connery wasn't playing a Scot in Highlander I don't think. I think he was Egyptian off the top of my head. THen he moved to Japan and then he wandered around a bit for 1000 years or so, so that would have been a tough (or possibly easy) accent to nail. Who's going to know? Reply #36. Aug 30 11, 12:44 PM |

Turbotude, I am Scottish myself and even I am not a fan of the thick Glaswegian accent, though I study in Glasgow! I like a mild, pleasant Scottish accent though, like my own :) Colin Farrell's Alexander the Great being Irish amused me, but at least this time he was using his own accent and not failing miserably at putting another on!
