What a great film has certainly done the musical justice, Hugh Jackman was outstanding as Jean Valjean, Samantha Barks as eponine was great as was eddie as marius, Sasha baron cpohen and Helena Bonham Carter were great as the Thenardiers although my personel choice would been Alun Armstrong, and Sue Tanner.

Saw it yesterday, very impressed having never seen the stage show. Excellent stuff. Surprised that anyone was questioning Hugh Jackmans vocal talents, I thought he was quite well known for being able to sing from his stage work. There was a bigger question for me over Russell Crowe's ability, but maybe that's just me. Nasty it is a fine film and even better live in a theatre, having been a fan of Les Miserables for 28 years now. As you rightly say there should be no sceptism regards Hugh Jackmans singing, He won a Tony award for his performance in Beauty and the beast on broadway. Russell Crowe was my main worry but felt he held his own, you should go see the stage show if you get the opportunity, and its world wise success is thanks to the so called press experts. They slaughtered it when it opened in london and Les Miserables does mean the miserable ones. I recall hearing Cameron Mackintosh say he was looking at contracts he'd signed to move it from the barbican theatre to Londons west end after the press slaughtering and mauling, he did not jump ship as when he tried ringing the box office to check on sales he could not get through hewas driven to the barbican to be met with queues of people trying to book tickets and when inside the barbican the phone was ringing non stop. Show what critics know as its been on in London for 28 years this year and still booking until late in the year, due to the success of the movie i anticipate in 2015 we will see a 30th anniversary show for it Reply #22. The range for Valjean is a bit bigger than Hugh Jackman's normal range. It is a dramatic tenor part, and Jackman had trouble with the high notes, especially in "Bring Him Home". I didn't think he was going to make it. After hearing Alfie Boe (and opera singer) sing "Bring Him Home" at the 25th Anniversary Concert for Les Mis, Jackman just couldn't compete. The movie changed my life. The movie was everything that I loved. It, once again, proves how wide a storyline was in those days. These days, people would either focus on the lovers, or the revolutionary students, OR the war. The story has so many stories, each of which have equal importance. I loved it. Good for you cool teen, you maybe intrested to learn theres a DVD out now Les Miserables the history of the worlds greatest story, It is a documentary that looks at the book the various films made and the musical.
