Subject: A Walk In The Woods

Is anyone going to see this? I'd fully intended to, but when I saw it starred Robert Redford (78) and Nick Nolte (74) it put me off. Emma Thompson (56) plays Mrs Bryson - Hollywood really does have a problem finding older actors suitable partners.

Bill Bryson and his friend were a pair of unfit, overweight forty somethings when they walked in the woods. The casting seems absurd to me.

Considering it looks like a movie catering exclusively to seniors (à la And So It Goes, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, or Last Vegas), I can understand the casting director's line of thinking. "Accuracy be damned! We need old actors in this movie for old people!" I'm not saying it was a good idea, but I get it.

I finally got round to watching this. It was intensely irritating for the first 20 minutes, then settled down to being mildly irritating. I didn't finish it, I just couldn't get past the hopeless miscasting.

I've read a couple of Bill Bryson books and found them amusing at first but repetitive in their ideas and irritating as they go along and he seems to go from funny highlighter of peculiarities and amusing stories to querulous whingeing complainer.

Sorry to be so hard on Bill Bryson. His books are definitely worth reading for the funny parts and the thoughtful parts.
