Subject: Movie subtitles vs. voice-over

Many countries choose to do voice-over.Do you consider actors should be heard in their own voice or it's not so important for the artistic message ? And if it is important , why the voice-over ?

I always prefer subtitles. I like to hear how the original actors voices sound, and if it's a language I studied at school, I try to see how much I can understand without relying on the subtitles, but they are essential for me.
Sometimes when you hear a dubbed version of a film first seen in the original language, it's amazing how different the voices can be. I've just seen a Danish film with English subtitles where the spoken language in the film was mostly German. It's a good film called "Land of Mine" and the subtitles didn't affect my "enjoyment" of the film. I've put "enjoyment" in speech marks, given that the subject matter of the film is rather horrific.

The second part of your question is "why the voice-over". I think it's just about sales and profits. Many people prefer to hear films in their own language rather than watch subtitles it seems and English is a more widely spoken language than some others. Recently the French TV station, Canal+, produced a series dramatising French history ("Versailles" about the reign of Louis XIV) and they decided to do it in English using an international cast, including British actors for the King, his mistress, his brother, and some other court members. They admitted they did this purely to increase international sales as it was a very expensive series to produce. They did a version dubbed into French I understand, for French speaking audiences.
