Answer: Charlie Dalton

Charlie Dalton is the true rebel of the class. During this scene, Mr Keating tells the boys how important it is to stick to your own beliefs but how difficult that can actually be in face of adversity and pressure from others. He asks the boys to find their own walk around a courtyard. Charlie Dalton hangs back, declaring that he is exercising his right not to participate.

He takes the lessons of living poetically and passionately to heart and insists his classmates call him "Nuwanda" and ends up in deep trouble when he fakes a phone call to the school from God, insisting that girls be allowed at the strict all boys private school.

This sign is shown very quickly at the beginning, with a big fanfare and bagpipes following it. The school is very much a no-nonsense school, focused more on discipline and tradition then in learning beneficial information. Mr. Keating throws the idea of discipline and tradition out the window, while still following the doctrines of excellence and honor.

Neil's final speech as Puck, also known as Robin Goodfellow, seemed to be delivered directly to his father in the auditorium: "If we shadows have offended, Think but this, and all is mended, That you have but slumber'd here While these visions did appear. ... Gentles, do not reprehend; if you pardon, we will mend; ... So, goodnight unto you all. Give me your hands, if we be friends, And Robin shall restore amends." Had this been a typical Hollywood film, Neil's father would have softened his attitude after hearing this speech, but alas, that was not to be.

Neil Perry pursued his dream of acting and played the part of Puck in "A Midsummer Nights Dream" and Todd Anderson overcame severe shyness to stand up for what he felt was right. The theme of seizing the day is seen throughout the movie and the choices of the students.

In the movie Dead Poets Society, the students address their English teacher with the phrase "Oh Captain, My Captain." This phrase is actually a line from a poem by Walt Whitman, titled "O Captain! My Captain!" The poem was written as an elegy for President Abraham Lincoln after his assassination in 1865. In the movie, the students stand on their desks and recite the phrase to honor their teacher, who has inspired them to think for themselves and seize the day.
