Sipsey kills Frank. We do not find this out until the very end of the movie. When Frank comes back to kidnap his son, Sipsey counteracts by hitting him on the head with a frying pan. Ruth thinks that Idgie murdered Frank, and has no idea of the crime Sipsey has committed. Smokey Lonesome is also present at the murder, but he does nothing except tell Frank that he should not take Ruth's baby.
