Mrs Emmeline Pankhurst, founder of the Women's Social and Political Union and tireless campaigner for women's rights, particularly for the right to vote, was known for her (then) innovative civil disobedience actions. Over seven years in the early twentieth century she was regularly imprisoned and in one eighteen-month period engaged in no fewer than ten hunger strikes. ('Take heart, for Mrs Pankhurst has been clapped in irons again!') She also campaigned for women's involvement in the war effort during the First World War and finally became a Conservative Party candidate in 1925.

This is one of Mary's famous lines: "spit spot." She says it to the children a lot in the movie. For instance she says "come along now, spit spot" to Jane and Michael near the very end when she is packing to leave and their father is calling them.

Disney had seen a quote Dick Van Dyke had made in a magazine article. In the article Van Dyke he stated he did not like the way Hollywood was going towards dirty pictures. Remember, this is back in the mid sixties. This was a subject dear to Disney's heart, so he invited Van Dyke over for a visit, later giving him the part as Bert, the happy-go-lucky chimney sweep. As an interesting note, Dick Van Dyke so badly wanted to play the part of the doddering elder Dawes Sr. that he offered to do it for free. Van Dyke never appeared in "Camelot", but he did appear in "Bye Bye Birdie", the play and movie.

The incomparable Arthur Treacher, who starred as Jeeves opposite David Niven's Bertie Wooster, plays Constable Jones. It is thus van Dyke who dons the beard and fluffy eyebrows of the doddery old man who 'died laughing', to the joy and relief of his grateful son (Mr Dawes's son, not van Dyke's). The joke that killed him? 'I know a man with a wooden leg named Smith.' 'What's the name of his other leg?'

Mary Poppins says "Close your mouth please Michael, we are not a codfish" to Michael when he just watched her slide up the stairs.

Mr. Banks sings about his comfortable, orderly life and how he enjoys it.

She uses to tape measure to see how Jane and Michael 'measure up'. Jane is found to be 'rather inclined to giggle, doesn't put things away.' Michael is 'extremely stubborn and suspicious.'
