Men from each family were called to fight in the Imperial army against the Huns. In Mulan's family, there was only Mulan's father. He had already fought in one war and was older and had problems with his leg. Mulan cut her hair, took her father's armor and his orders and went to join the army.

Shan-Yu says this to Shang when he is confronted in the Imperial City. Mulan then goes to help Shang, and explains to Shan-Yu that it was she who took away his victory. After she pulls her hair back, Shan-Yu recognizes Mulan as "the soldier from the mountains" and proceeds to go after her instead of Shang.
