Charlie (Kevin Costner) wants to know the real name of Boss Spearman (Robert Duvall) before the big gunfight. Boss and Charlie are going to fight against several gunfighters and it is very doubtful they will both live through it. He does not want to go to his end without knowing Boss's real name. They had worked together for many years and Charlie only knew him as "Boss." Boss makes him swear an oath not to tell anyone his real name if they survive the gunfight.

When Mose goes into town, we learn that the town is called Harmonville. Denton Baxter, the land baron of Harmonville, calls this town his own. Therefore, the people of Harmonville live in fear, because Baxter is an evil man.
