Mel Gibson was born in 1956 in New York, USA and has had quite a lot of success starring in the "Lethal Weapon" franchise as well as directing his own movies such as "The Passion of the Christ" and "Braveheart", which won Golden Globe and Academy awards. He has had some serious personal issues with alcoholism and been accused of domestic violence and anti-Semitism.

Irene Bedard is Pocahontas' speaking voice; however, Judy Kuhn sings the part. Judy was also a featured performer in "Les Misérables" in concert and she took part in various episodes of "Law & Order". Some of the songs sung include, "Colors of the Wind" and "Just Around the River Bend". In the original movie, she also performs "If I Never Knew You" with Mel Gibson.

Captain John Smith and the settlers work for the Virginia Company which is the name of the actual company the movie is loosely based around. The Virginia Company is two companies, the Virginia Company of London and the Virginia Company of Plymouth and their mission was to create new settlements along the coast of North America. In the movie, the ship the Susan Constant arrives in the New World in 1607 with Captain John Smith and his group of settlers and tells a fictionalized account of his interactions with Pocahontas.

Chief Powhatan also went by the name Wahunsunacock but he is known as Powhatan in the movie. Her father returns at the beginning of the movie with intents of having Pocahontas marry Kocoum. Although Pocahontas doesn't choose the same path, he is supportive of her decision in the end. His speaking voice is Russell Means and his part is sung by Jim Cummings.

Alan Menken is one of a very small number of people who has won an Oscar, a Tony, an Emmy and a Grammy. Menken and Stephen Schwartz teamed up to write the songs for "Pocahontas" and won two Oscars - one for Best Original Song ("Colors of the Wind") and the other for Best Musical.

Answer: Steady as the Beating Drum

"Pocahontas" introduces the audience to the New World and the people who live there, their environment, work and community. It is a joyous introduction to the tribe and their way of life. The movie has received mixed reviews and criticism for being historically inaccurate and for being quite bland and uninspired, especially compared to other Disney blockbusters. There are however moments in the movie that are colorful and beautiful and the opening scene, in my opinion, captures that.

The song is the introductory song for the tribe and as the other songs in the film, the lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz and the music was written by Alan Menken. The singer for the song is voice actor Jim Cummings who has leant his voice to approximately 400 roles, including Tigger and Winnie the Pooh.

Mel Gibson does in fact do both. He not only has a passion for acting but he has also done some directing and producing. Some examples are the production and direction of "Passion of the Christ" and he directed a live stage production of "Hamlet". In "Pocahontas", he plays John Smith, a traveler seeking to find gold in the new world. Instead, he finds Pocahontas, a Native American woman whom he ends up falling in love with. In turn, he tries to protect her tribe from his evil governor, Ratcliffe, which winds him up in a bit of trouble. In the end, he earns the tribe's trust and returns to his home land to be taken care of.

Our ill-fated lovers Pocahontas and Captain Smith meet at the waterfall. Pocahontas follows him to the waterfall, he knows that someone is there and aims his gun at her. She stands up and looks right at him, her hair blowing in the wind behind her and they have a moment of staring into each others eyes. He approaches her and she runs away.

The song was originally made for the scene where John Smith is being held captive and Pocahontas comes to visit him. However, during test screenings with child audiences, their attention "seemed to wander from the film" so Alan Menken suggested they cut it. They put the scene back into one of the DVD releases.

At first John plans to shoot at her, but he sees that she is beautiful and not a "savage". Then he lowers his musket.

Named Meeko and Flit, the raccoon and hummingbird provide some comedy to the movie. For instance, the raccoon's bum and tail look like a target that the hummingbird tries to hit with his long beak and misses of course, squashing his beak on a log. Flit the hummingbird steals Meeko's food out of the air because he is so fast. These sidekicks however don't speak and this is a criticism of the film, a missed opportunity of other Disney sidekicks such as the verbal exchanges between Timon and Pumbaa from "The Lion King".

Captain John Smith and his group of men are led by Governor Ratcliffe, a greedy and ignorant man who is intent on getting wealthy. He has the men start digging for gold as soon as they arrive, clearing the land and blowing up anything in their way as they do so. While they're destroying the land, John Smith goes exploring and meets Pocahontas. Despite being from two different worlds, they fall in love and look for a way to bring peace to their groups.

This song is being played during the beginning credits. These are the first words sung in the song. You see the tribe going about their daily routine as they hear the warriors returning home.

Kocoum enters the clearing and sees Pocahontas and John kissing. He goes into a rage. Then Thomas comes and he shoots Kocoum because Kocoum is trying to kill John with a knife.

Irene Bedard is an American actress of Inuit and Cree ancestry who voices Pocahontas and has also starred in "Pocahontas II" and "The Tree of Life". She did not do the singing though, that was done by Judy Kuhn, an American actress and singer known for musical theatre. Kuhn has acted in "Les Miserables", "Chess" and "Sunset Boulevard" and has several Tony nominations. She provides the singing voice for Pocahontas, including her rendition of "Colors of the Wind", which won an Oscar.

Ratcliffe's cape is in fact red. At one point of the movie during "Mine Mine Mine" while he fantasizes about being awarded greatly, the cape turns to gold but the actual color is red.

Grandmother Willow is a wise and spiritual talking willow tree that acts as a guide for Pocahontas. Pocahontas comes to her for answers and guidance to questions and problems she is having and she brings Captain John Smith to meet her as they try to figure out how to bring peace and harmony to their respective groups.

"And if you happen to see any Indians, shoot them. Oh, and Thomas? You've been a slipshod sailor and a poor excuse for a soldier. Don't disappoint me again."
Towards the beginning of the movie, you learn what a poor shot Thomas is, causing Ratcliffe not to trust him with a gun. Since John Smith has run away to be with Pocahontas, and Thomas is Ratcliffe's only choice, he sends Thomas after Smith to bring him back. Altough John Smith has been nothing but a good friend to Thomas, Thomas wants to please his governor. This puts him between a rock and a hard place and leaving him with the decision of right or wrong.

She threw herself over John, protecting him, in my very favorite part of the movie. She convinced her father and the colonists to talk, and not fight.
