26 What does Wendy say to Dick in the kitchen?
Answer: "I am going to have to leave a trail of breadcrumbs to find my way out."

Stuart is going to give Jack a tour of the hotel. He asks Dick, the head chef to give Wendy a tour of the kitchen. Dick takes Danny and Wendy to the kitchen. Wendy is amazed at how big the kitchen is. She tells Dick she will have to leave a trail of breadcrumbs to find her way out. Dick tells her not to worry that it is big, but it is still just a kitchen. He tells her most of this stuff she will never have to touch. She says that is good because she wouldn't know what to do with it anyways. He takes them into the dry pantry and shows them all the food stored. Dick asks Danny if he would like some ice cream, but he does it through shining. Then they go to the freezer so he can show them the food in there. Dick escorts them out as Jack and Stuart come down the hall towards them. He then asks Danny what his favorite ice cream is. Danny says, "Chocolate". He asks Danny's parents if he can give him some ice cream and they say yes. Danny and Dick sit at a table while Danny eats his chocolate ice cream. Dick tries to talk to Danny about his ability, but Danny doesn't want to talk about it. He tells Dick he isn't allowed to talk about it.
trivia question Quick Question
What is the name of the main chef of the hotel?

27 'Pardon me, miss. What time will we get to Denver?'
Answer: Dick

The scene on the airplane when Dick asks about arrival time was actually cut out of some of the European release versions of the film.
28 'Whenever you come in here and interrupt me, you're breaking my concentration. You're distracting me, and it will then take me time to get back to where I was.'
Answer: Jack

Jack goes off on his wife and tells her to basically never come into the Colorado Room.
29 'You mean they ate each other up?'
Answer: Danny

Danny asks for clarification on what cannibalism is.
30 When Wendy brings Jack breakfast in bed and they discuss the writing process, what part of the set is the scene partially filmed through?
Answer: mirror

There is a significant amount of the scene that is filmed through the mirror in the bedroom. This sets the audience up to be watching doubles and reflections in the film.
31 What is the continuity problem with Danny in the conversation in the kitchen between him and Dick about shining?
Answer: Danny's hands change position between each camera set-up.

Again, probably symptomatic of doing so many takes, and I'm sure it didn't help that Danny was a kid. What amazed me, though, was how consistent the amount of ice cream smeared on Danny's face was. That must have been tiresome for both Danny, the makeup person, and the script supervisor (who is in charge of checking continuity between takes).
32 In the beginning of the movie, how long had Jack been sober?
Answer: 5 months

Wendy says this when she is talking to the doctor about Danny.

33 How old were the 'twin' girls in the movie?
Answer: 8 and 10

In the movie The Shining, the 'twin' girls are a haunting and eerie presence throughout the film. The two girls, who are dressed identically in blue dresses, are seen standing in the hallway of the Overlook Hotel and are a symbol of the supernatural forces at work in the hotel. The younger of the two girls, who is played by Lisa and Louise Burns, was only 8 years old at the time of filming, while her older sister was 10. Despite their young age, the Burns sisters delivered a chilling performance that has become one of the most iconic scenes in horror movie history.

34 How did Jack die in the end of the film?
Answer: Freezes to death

Aww, poor Jack! The make-up artist must have had to work overtime!
35 What food does Wendy pour into a bowl?
Answer: fruit cocktail

Wendy is in the kitchen preparing a meal for the family. She is also watching the news on television. She opens a giant can of Libby's Fruit Cocktail as the news talks about a missing skier. The news says the search has been called off due to the storm that is coming. Wendy pours the contents of the can into the bowl. Wendy at first is happy at the hotel, but starts to realize something is wrong there. One day she is checking the boiler and hears Jack start to scream. She runs to Jack who has fallen on the floor. Jack tells her he has had a terrible nightmare. He dreamt he killed Wendy and Danny, he tells her he cut them up into little pieces. Wendy looks worried, but tells Jack it is just a dream. Danny starts to walk into the lobby and Wendy tells him to go to his room. Danny keeps walking toward her and she leaves Jack to take Danny upstairs. She sees Danny has been attacked and accuses Jack of doing it. Later on Wendy finds Jack sitting in the bar and tells him there is someone else in the hotel. Jack tells her she is crazy, but Wendy says Danny was attacked in a room by a woman. Jack goes to the room and finds the woman. He later goes back to Wendy and says there is nobody there.

Shelley Duvall plays the part of Wendy Torrance. If you go by the description of Wendy in the book, then Shelley physically is all wrong. Wendy, in the book, is a blond and very attractive. I'm not quite sure why Stanley chose Shelley for the role, but glad he did. She is a wonderful actor and you can really feel the horror she is portraying in the movie. Shelley also plays the role of Olive Oyl in "Popeye".
36 'All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.'
Answer: no character says this

This phrase fills the pages of Jack's typed work. He's definitely sane. Yeah.
37 'Come and play with us, Danny. Forever. And ever. And ever.'
Answer: the girls Danny sees

They talk to him in the hall and he sees images of their butchered bodies.
38 'See? It's okay. He saw it on the television.'
Answer: Jack

I've heard analyses of the film that claim it's all a critique of American TV. Part of how they support this is the fact that many of Jack's lines after being locked in the storage room are lines from popular television shows. Unfortunately for the analysis, some of those lines were adlibbed, so couldn't have been part of Kubrick's premeditated intentions.
39 What is across from Jack as he sits down at the empty bar in the gold room?
Answer: mirror

There is a mirror across from Lloyd, suggesting that he is actually speaking to himself in this scene.
40 Where is Danny when he FIRST sees the two girls?
Answer: at home, in a vision

Question Reference: Quiz: The Shining.
41 What was the name of Jack's illusionary bartender?
Answer: Lloyd

Lloyd is the name of Jack's illusionary bartender in the movie The Shining. Lloyd is a figment of Jack's imagination, and he appears to Jack whenever he needs a drink. Interestingly, the actor who played Lloyd, Joe Turkel, also appeared in another iconic science fiction movie as Dr. Eldon Tyrell in Blade Runner. The Shining is considered one of the greatest horror movies of all time and is known for its iconic scenes and memorable characters.

42 What was the name of the actor who plays Danny?
Answer: Danny Lloyd

Isn't it amazing how the characters of Jack and Danny are played by actors of the same name?
43 What Disney character's image appears in the movie?
Answer: Dopey

We see Danny in the bathroom standing on a stool talking to Tony. On his bedroom wall there are several cartoon character decals. The decals are of Snoopy, Dopey, and Minnie Mouse. Danny is asking Tony why he doesn't want to go to the Overlook. Tony says he doesn't want to tell Danny why. Danny persists with the question and finally Tony relents. We see Danny's reflection in the mirror and he gets a terrified look on his face. Tony shows Danny an elevator shaft that has a river of blood coming from it. Tony also shows Danny two young girls who are identical in appearance. Tony then shows Danny screaming and Danny blacks out. When we next see Danny he is lying in his bed and and being examined by a doctor. In his room are several games and toys. There is also a puppet of Goofy. The doctor is asking Danny if he smelled anything funny or saw any lights before he passed out. Danny tells the doctor no, he tells her the last thing he was doing was talking to Tony. Wendy tells the doctor, Tony is Danny's imaginary friend. The doctor asks Danny where Tony is and Danny says he lives in his mouth. The doctor asks Danny if he opens his mouth can she see Tony. Danny says that Tony hides in his stomach so she won't be able to see him. The doctor then asks Danny if Tony ever tells Danny to do things. Danny ponders this question for a moment and then tells the doctor he doesn't want to talk about Tony anymore. The doctor then tells Danny to spend the rest of the day lying in bed quietly.

Dopey is, of course, from the feature film "Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs". Dopey is the only one among the seven who doesn't speak and has no beard. The film won an honorary Oscar in 1939. The award was extremely unique because it was one full sized Oscar and seven smaller ones. The award was presented to Walt Disney by Shirley Temple. Donald and Pluto are considered among Disney's fabulous five. Horace is a character from the Silly Symphony series.
44 'I don't think that's true. I think you have some very definite ideas about what should be done with Danny, and I'd like to know what they are.'
Answer: Jack

Jack antagonizes Wendy about trying to get Danny some help.
45 'It's just like pictures in a book. It isn't real.'
Answer: Tony

Danny (as Tony) comforts himself by reminding himself of his talk with Dick after he sees the girls' ghosts in whole and butchered form.
46 'Oh, this old place has had an illustrious past. In it's heyday, it was one of the stopping places for the jet-set, even before anybody knew what the jet-set was.'
Answer: Mr. Ullman

Mr. Ullman explains about the hotel during the grand tour. He insists it's seen 'all the best people.'
47 What was on the bar that provided a visual division between Jack and Lloyd?
Answer: light strip

This beam of light running up the center of the frame looks like something out of '2001: A Space Odyssey'.
48 At the beginning of the 'I'm not being grouchy' scene, Jack clearly rips a paper out of the typewriter as Wendy approaches. What is problematic about this in the context of the scene as cut?
Answer: When Wendy leaves and we cut back to Jack, there is a piece of paper waiting in the typewriter.

Some folks have suggested that this is because the hotel is 'feeding' Jack paper. I think that's very unlikely and suspect that the scene just had to be cut down so we never see Jack put the new paper in.
49 How high are the walls of the hedge maze?
Answer: 13 feet

Ullman says this when he is showing the Torrances the maze.
Question Reference: Quiz: The Shining.
50 What kind of drink does Jack order from the bartender the second time?
Answer: Bourbon on the rocks

In the movie The Shining, Jack orders bourbon on the rocks from the bartender the second time. Bourbon is a type of whiskey that is primarily made in the United States, specifically in Kentucky. It is made from a mash bill that consists of at least 51% corn and is aged in charred oak barrels. Bourbon on the rocks is a popular way to enjoy this type of whiskey, as the ice helps to mellow out the flavors and aromas of the spirit. However, some purists argue that adding ice to bourbon can dilute the flavors and alter the overall experience of drinking it. Regardless of how one chooses to enjoy it, bourbon remains a beloved American spirit that has gained popularity around the world.
