Don Tommasino (Mario Cotone) -- whom observant viewers will recognize as the man who would one day act as 'sponsor' to Michael during his exile to Sicily in 'The Godfather' -- clearly has close ties to the Corleone family.

After Vito murders Don Ciccio, Tommasino is shot in the back during their escape, which is why he spends a good deal of 'The Godfather' in a wheelchair. Continuity -- ain't it fun?

De Niro won his first Academy Award (as Best Supporting Actor) for his role as Vito, marking the first and only time (as of September 2005) that two actors have won Academy Awards for playing the same character: Marlon Brando had won a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Vito Corleone in 'The Godfather' two years earlier.

The studio executives absolutely refused Coppola's suggestion, since this 'Martin Scorsese' kid Coppola recommended was a nobody. Ha!

The Sicilian vendetta.

At the set-up for the birthday party for Vito Corleone, we see all of the brothers -- Sonny (James Caan), Fredo, Tom, and Michael -- Sonny's friend Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo), whom he introduces to Connie (Talia Shire) for the first time; and Sal Tessio (Abe Vigoda), who brings the cake. Despite Coppola's pleading, Marlon Brando simply refused to appear in 'The Godfather Part II,' even for just the one scene.

A solid gold telephone has been provided by 'UTT,' which is obviously meant to represent IT and T (predecessor to AT and T). It would seem that Coppola didn't want to implicate any actual American corporations in the activities of Cuba in late 1958.
