After a month with Dave Watson as caretaker manager, Kendall returned to Everton. This was his third tenure as manager at the club, but unfortunately, it failed to live up to the great days of the '80s, with Everton dropping rapidly down the table and several players left during his tenure, including cup winners John Ebbrell, Anders Limpar, Matt Jackson and Vinny Samways in the 1996-1997 season, and Neville Southall, Andy Hinchcliffe, Graham Stuart and Earl Barrett the season after. Kendall left by mutual consent at the end of the 1997-1998 season, after Everton narrowly avoided relegation.

Many seasons later, aged 31, he returned to Everton at the start of the 2017-2018 season and was the club's top scorer for that season.
