Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is Captain Hastings job at the beginning of the book?

Answer: A private secretary

Hastings is returning to London from Paris. He is staying with Hercule Poirot, his friend. While on a train, Hastings meets a very pretty young lady. She is an actress, or rather a child acrobat. She is looking for her sister. As she leaves, she tells Hastings that her name is Cinderella.
2. Where does the letter from Mr Renauld say Poirot may have to travel to?

Answer: Chile

Poirot receives a letter from Paul Renauld, a wealthy South American, but who lives in France. He needs Poirot's help and asks him to come to France, and he may have to go to Chile too. Poirot feels uneasy about the letter. He and Hastings travel to France, but when they arrive at Mr Renauld's home, a policeman informs them that Mr Renauld was murdered that morning.
3. Where was Mrs Renauld found bound and gagged?

Answer: In the bedroom

The commissioner of police is Monsieur Bex, who has worked with Poirot before. The front door was found ajar, that morning, and Madame Renauld was found bound and gagged. Mr Renauld was later found stabbed in the back, outside, in an open grave. Madame Renauld tells of the two masked men binding her before abducting her husband. One of the maids mentions a woman coming to see Mr Renauld the night before - it could have been either Madame Daubreuil, a lady who lives next door, or an English lady.
4. What colour hair is found in the study?

Answer: Black

Poirot is told that Jack Renauld, Mr Renauld's son, was sent on a business trip by his father. He has not been told of the death yet. Poirot is shown a love letter, which was in Mr Renauld's pocket, and also a fragment of a cheque for "Duveen". The murder weapon was a knife, similar to a paper knife - Jack Renauld had it made specially and gave it to his mother. Mr Renauld had recently made a new will, leaving everything to his wife, not to his son.
5. What does Poirot find near to the murder scene?

Answer: Lead piping

The scene of crime is, surprisingly, a golf course. Mrs Renauld collapses again after identifying her husband's body. The famous detective, Monsieur Giraud, from the Paris Surete, is also on the case. He dislikes Poirot very much. Poirot and Hastings meet Madame Daubreuil, and her daughter, Marthe. Madame Daubreuil is unwilling to answer any questions. Poirot is sure that he has seen Madame Daubreuil before, and it was connected with a murder case.
6. Where is the body of Mr Renauld kept?

Answer: In the tool shed

Hastings meets Cinderella again, the girl who he met on the train. She is on the golf course, and tells Hastings how much she likes crime. She begs him to tell her everything and show her the body. Unwillingly, Hastings does so. Cinderella collapses when he sees the weapon but is soon revived. Hastings takes her back to her hotel.

He wants to find out more about her, as surely her name is not really Cinderella.
7. Who does Gabriel Stoner, Mr Renauld's secretary, think was blackmailing Mr Renauld?

Answer: Madame Daubreuil

Mr Renauld was not happy when his son said he was planning to marry Marthe Daubreuil. They quarrelled violently before Jack left on his business trip. Jack returns home, his boat was cancelled. The case is complicated when it is revealed that the murder weapon has disappeared from the tool shed. Hastings is shocked; he realises he should not had shown Cinderella the body and also should had locked the tool shed after him. Without Hastings knowing, Poirot has been making discreet enquiries about Cinderella.
8. What was the child acrobat group called?

Answer: Dulcibella Kids

The case becomes even more puzzling when another body of a man is found in the tool shed, murdered in the same way. But the new body has been dead for over forty-eight hours. Poirot tells of the notorious Beroldy case, many years ago, which was very similar to the Renauld case. Mrs Beroldy is now Madame Daubreuil. Jack is arrested for his father's murder. Poirot and Hastings go to see a variety show in London, featuring Cinderella and her sister.
9. How many paper knives did Jack Renauld have made?

Answer: 3

Cinderella comes to see Hastings. She says that Bella Duveen is her twin sister. Bella was in love with Jack Renauld. When Cinderella could not find her sister that day, when she met Hastings, she knew Bella had gone to find Jack. Cinderella stole the knife, from the tool shed. Jack had three paperknives made, gave one to his mother, one to Bella and keeping the third for himself.
10. And finally, who did Captain Hastings eventually marry?

Answer: Dulcie Duveen

Hastings has loved Cinderella - real name Dulcie - since he first met her. Marthe Daubreuil murdered Mr Renauld, and also, nearly, Madame Renauld, before falling and hitting her head in her room. She later dies. Jack Renauld is released and plans to marry Bella. Hope you enjoyed my quiz and look out for more soon!
