Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What word connects a building where a country's elected representatives meet to pass legislation and a collective noun for a group of owls?

Answer: Parliament

The owl has long been associated with the quality of wisdom, the owl being a symbol of Athena, the goddess of wisdom in the Greek pantheon. This explains why they are regularly depicted on graduation congratulations cards wearing mortar boards and glasses, and clutching a rolled-up diploma.

However, while few would question the intelligence of a parliament of noble owls, the wisdom of the members of various human parliaments around the world may be more questionable!

2. Which of the following creatures kills, directly or indirectly, more humans than any others?

Mosquitoes carry viruses and parasites from one person to another, spreading diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, and West Nile Virus, just to name a few. It is estimated that mosquitoes are responsible for at least two million deaths every year.

3. One of the things people notice about cats is their whiskers. Do you know what the proper scientific word is for whiskers?

Answer: vibrissae

Cats' whiskers are very sensitive, and the ones you see either side of a cat's muzzle are the same width as its body - this helps it to know if it can get through a space without getting stuck. The whiskers can also detect changes in air currents around objects, which helps the cat to move around more safely in the dark. There are also whiskers above a cat's eyes, and on the back of its front legs. Cats are not the only animals with whiskers - most mammals have them.
'Vibrissae' is plural, the singular is 'vibrissa'.

6. Often used for tuna-fishing bait and only occasionally eaten, which of the following Atlantic fish has the rather interesting scientific name Boops boops?

7. At 300/200, what animal has the highest recorded blood pressure reading?

Answer: Giraffe

The distance between an adult giraffe's brain and heart is approximately 2 meters (6 1/2 feet) which requires a great deal of pressure to maintain blood flow between the two organs.

8. What is the biggest distinction between the Australasian robin and the European robin?

Answer: Its colouring

European robins, pretty little birds from the flycatcher family, range right across Europe, as far east as Siberia and as far south as North Africa - while the sweet little Australasian robins are found all around the Pacific region, including Australia, New Zealand an New Guinea and as far east as Samoa.

The main difference between these two beautiful little species of robins are that the Australasian robins have more vivid colouring colouring than their European counterparts. Their darker feathers, for example, are much darker in shade, while their famous little manly chests are a more vivid red - with some even coming with a pink or yellow chest with various colours, such as blue, on their backs. Both families of robins, lovely gifts from nature, have songs which delight the soul and the heart of man.

9. What am I? I am made up of four organisms (or zooids) and my tentacles can reach up to 165 feet (50 meters). I have no propulsion, so I merely drift about. I was named for my weird shape.

Answer: Portuguese Man-Of-War

The Portuguese Man-of-War isn't a jellyfish, instead it is a siphonophore and even though it looks like one organism, it is actually four. Having said this, none of the organisms can survive without the others. The top zoid, which looks a bit like a mohawk hairdo, is a gas filled bag that gives the man-of-war the ability to float.

It was this feature the Portuguese Man-of-War was named after - being that it looked very similar in shape to the full sail on the 18th century Portuguese naval ships.

The next two zoids are the tentacles: the first are the gastrozooids, which are the feeding tentacles. The next are the dactylozooids, which are for the defence and capture of prey. Finally there are the gonozooids, which as the name suggests, are for reproduction.

The Portuguese Man-of-War can still produce a nasty sting from its tentacles days after the rest of it is dead, so touching a beached one of these is not a great idea. They can be found all over the world - probably because they have no propulsion.
