1. Which of these chameleon species comes from Madagascar, Reunion and Mauritius?

Answer: Panther chameleon

The panther chameleon originally came from Madagascar, but was later introduced to other islands in the Indian Ocean. Males can grow to be twenty inches, whilst females are about half the size. Their coloring differs from place to place, with those from Madagascar tending to be bright blue.
2. In which part of the world would you find a leopard gecko in the wild?

Answer: Central and south Asia

Leopard geckos are native to Afghanistan, Iran, Nepal and the Indian subcontinent. Their preferred habitat is deserts and dry grasslands. Their name comes from their coloration of yellow/orange with dark spots.
3. In which of these continents would you NOT find any member of the crocodylidae family (in the wild)?

Answer: Europe

The crocodylidae family includes crocodiles, alligators, caimans and gharials. The only continents on which you wouldn't find at least one species from this family in the wild are Europe and Antarctica.
4. The Komodo dragon is the heaviest lizard in the world. What is the second heaviest?

Answer: Asian water monitor

The Asian water monitor is native to south and southeast Asia. It has a maximum weight of around 100 pounds, just over half of that of the Komodo dragon. Water monitors are carnivores, with diets which include rodents, birds and snakes.
5. What is another name for the American iguana?

Answer: Green iguana

The green iguana is also known as the American iguana or common green iguana. It is native to an area stretching from Mexico to Brazil and across the Caribbean, and has also been introduced to such varied places as Florida, Hawaii, Taiwan and Thailand.
6. What is the common name of the Australian genus of lizards "Pogona"?

Answer: Bearded dragon

Pogona is the bearded dragon genus. There are eight species, including Nullarbor, Kimberley and Rankin's. They are mostly found in deserts and other dry areas of Australia.
7. What is unique about the Jackson's chameleon?

Answer: It has horns

Jackson's chameleon is native to eastern Africa but has also been introduced into the USA. The male has three horns on its head, and has a length of up to 15 inches. Females are smaller and don't have horns.
8. Three of these reptiles are species of tortoise; which one is a species of turtle?

Answer: Olive ridley

The main difference between a tortoise and a turtle is that the former are land-dwelling whilst the latter live mostly in water.

The olive ridley turtle, also known as the Pacific ridley, is the most abundant and the second-smallest of all sea turtles.

The Galapagos giant is the largest species of tortoise; the Bolson is the largest North American tortoise and lives in the Chihuahuan Desert; the Lobatse hinge-back is a tortoise found in Botswana and South Africa.
9. Which is the only one of the following that is classified as a reptile?

Answer: Slow worm

Slow worms are legless lizards. They look like snakes, but have eyelids and visible ears. The other options listed are all amphibians.
10. What is a snake doing if it is performing ecdysis?

Answer: Shedding its skin

Snakes shed their skin between four and eight times a year, and this process is called ecdysis. Other creatures perform a similar procedure as well, such as insects and arachnids. The term ecdysis comes from the Greek for "strip".
