Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Farrah Fawcett played the victim, Francine Hughes, in this abusive movie with Paul Le Mat. Paul played the role of her abusive husband, Mickey. Can you name the movie where the wife took a match to her husband's bed?

Answer: The Burning Bed

Francine Hughes lived in Michigan with her husband and three children. She was tired of her abusive husband and tried to leave him. She couldn't leave him, so she struck a match and threw it on the bed of her sleeping husband, burning him to ashes. Francine was found not guilty in the murder of her husband.
This movie brought quite a bit of talk to Michigan. The movie won a few awards, but quite a few men were very leery of abusing their wives after this movie was released.
2. Normally Tom Hanks is the sweet, nice and thoughtful guy. But, in this movie he played a hardened killer. What is the name of this movie that he gets shot by the beach on Lake Michigan?

Answer: Road to Perdition

Mike Sullivan is a hit man and his son witnesses' one of his "hits" by accident. At the end of the movie, Mike and his son, Mike Jr. are in the beach house on Lake Michigan. The beach house is actually in West Olive, Michigan, which is between Holland and Grand Haven, Michigan.
As much as I enjoyed the movie, I was NOT expecting this type of role from Tom Hanks. A little surprising, to say the least.
3. Adam Herz wanted to use some of his "growing up" experiences in East Grand Rapids, Michigan. He wrote the screenplay for this movie about a group of sex-crazed boys. What is the name of his first movie from this series?

Answer: American Pie

Adam was born in Manhattan, New York, but grew up in East Grand Rapids. He furthered his schooling at the University of Michigan. Adam was the writer for the entire trilogy of "American Pie".
4. Richard Collier knew Elise McKenna, he felt it. He had to go back to her. What heart moving film is this that is filmed on Mackinac Island, Michigan?

Answer: Somewhere in Time

Christopher Reeve played the role of Richard Collier in this time traveling movie with Jane Seymour. Richard felt the need to go back to Elise after meeting 'the older' Elise. Richard put himself in a spot to travel back to the earlier days of Elise. But a penny forced him back to the present time.
Little Arthur was one of my favorite characters in this movie. The funny thing about the movie was when Richard drove up to the Grand Hotel on the island. No cars are allowed on Mackinac Island. But you will see lots of bicycles and horses. Watch your step.
5. Eddie Murphy is a Detroit police officer in this cute detective flick. Axel Foley goes to California to nab the killer in this movie. What is the name of this 1984 movie?

Answer: Beverly Hills Cop

Eddie Murphy teamed up with Judge Reinhold and John Ashton in this cops and robbers movie. Eddie came to Beverly Hills to do a little investigating on his own. My favorite line of the whole movie is when Axel repeats, "Look, man, I ain't fallin' for no banana in my tailpipe!"
6. Tim Taylor is proud of the Detroit Lions and the state of Michigan. Tim also was very proud of his television show, "Tool Time". Do you know what television series featured "Tim 'The Tool Man' Taylor"?

Answer: Home Improvement

Tim Allen was actually born in Colorado, but moved to Birmingham, Michigan when he was younger. Tim attended Western Michigan University and went on to do stand up comedy in Detroit. Tim only won one Golden Globe for his role of Tim Taylor, but was nominated for this Award five years in a row. How do you say that, "ar ar ar?!"
7. This actor/singer was born in Detroit, Michigan. He became famous after teaming up with the beautiful Cher. Who is this actor?

Answer: Sonny Bono

Sonny was born in Detroit in 1935. Sonny became famous as the "shorter" partner of Sonny and Cher. Sonny made numerous television appearances in "Laugh-In" and "The Love Boat". He left the show business world and headed for politics. He became the mayor of Palm Springs, California. Sonny's life was cut short due to a skiing accident in South Lake Tahoe. Just remember Sonny, "The Beat Goes On..."
8. This actor played the role of Superman/Clark Kent. Can you believe that Superman was born in Mt. Clemens, Michigan? What actor is this I'm referring to?

Answer: Dean Cain

Dean Tanaka was born in Michigan in 1966. His family moved to California when he was younger. Dean was signed on to play football with the Bills, but an injury ended that career. Dean also hosted the television show "Ripley's Believe It or Not!".
9. This director picked up an Oscar for his direction for "The Godfather: Part II". Who is this award winning director that was born in Detroit?

Answer: Francis Ford Coppola

Francis Ford Coppola has quite a list of achievements to his name. He not only has directed movies, but produced and written screenplays for films also. Mr. Coppola has also co-hosted "Saturday Night Live" back in 1986.

There are quite a few entertainers also at the family reunions in this family. His daughter Sofia Coppola picked up her own Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay for "Lost in Translation". His nephew, Nicolas Cage also picked up an Oscar for Best Actor in "Leaving Las Vegas".
10. I recall this actress saying, "One ringy dingy.... Two ringy dingy... snort snort..." Do you recall this actress from the hit television show, "Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In", who was born in Michigan?

Answer: Lily Tomlin

Lily Tomlin shares the same birthday as me, September 1st. Both of us were born in the beautiful state of Michigan. From there, we differ. She was born right in the city of Detroit. She went on to Hollywood and made lots of movies, and made a ton of cash. But we both snort the same! I loved watching her in "Laugh-In" as Ernestine the operator. "Snort snort!"
