Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these popular toys/games was NOT first released to America in the 1970s?

Answer: Rubik's Cube

Erno Rubik invented the Cube back in 1974, but its craze didn't reach the United States until 1980.
The Magna Doodle was originally released in 1974, Othello was released in 1977, and Simon was released in 1978.
2. Which of the following skin conditions is not generally treated with a form of cryotherapy or cryosurgery?

Answer: Sebaceous cysts

Sebaceous cysts are sebum filled closed sacs that can grow on any part of the body except for the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. Oddly, in most cases these cysts don't require medical treatment. However, if they continue to grow to the point of pain and infection, the typical methods of treatment are heat therapy and standard surgical removal.
3. Although each of these men have been awarded "Time" magazine's coveted "Man of the Year" Award at least twice, which of these men is the only one to earn the title two years in a row?

Answer: Richard Nixon

Nixon was Man of the Year in 1971, and shared the title with Henry Kissinger in 1972.
Franklin Roosevelt was Man of the Year in 1932, 1934 and 1941. Winston Churchill was given the honor in 1940 and 1949, as well as being the Man of the Half-Century. Joseph Stalin was Man of the Year in both 1939 and 1942. Just another little tidbit I find interesting... Adolf Hitler was Man of the Year in 1938.
4. According to legend, the leaves on a four-leaved clover each stand for a different value. Which of the following is NOT one of those values?

Answer: Strength

The fourth leaf stands for...big surprise here...luck. In addition, finding a four-leaved clover is actually quite a difficult task. It is estimated that there are around 30,000 three-leaved clovers for every four-leaved clover.
5. Which of the following activities is NOT technically illegal?

Answer: Sneezing publicly in Ohio

While it is OK to sneeze wherever you'd like to in Ohio, it is illegal to get a fish drunk and to go whaling on Sundays.
Another wonderful thing about America is that every state has absurd laws. Sleeping naked in Minnesota is actually an illegal activity, as are piercing your ear in Minnesota and spitting on a sidewalk in Oklahoma.
6. In 1960, The Mars Incorporated candy company originally released their widely popular candy Starburst under the name Opal Fruits. Which of the following was not one of the original four flavors of Opal Fruits?

Answer: Cherry

Originally released in the United Kingdom, The fourth original flavor of Opal Fruits was actually lime, which remained a flavor until the late 1970s, when it was replaced with cherry. Opal fruits came to the United States in 1976 under the name Starburst, a name that the United Kingdom didn't adopt until 1998.
7. Swedish sculptor and engraver Erik Lindberg designed the medals for several Nobel Prizes. Which category did he NOT design the Nobel medal for?

Answer: Economics

The Nobel medal given in Economics was designed by Gunvor Svensson-Lundqvist. Before you ask, Gunvor Svensson-Lundqvist was a Swedish woman, and she designed more than 100 different medals during her career.
8. What was comedy legend Lenny Bruce's real name?

Answer: Leonard Alfred Schneider

Lenny Bruce was arguably the most influential comedian and social critic of all time, and he helped influence other comedy legends such as Richard Pryor and George Carlin. Lenny was convicted of obscenity in 1964, but received the first posthumous pardon in New York state history in 2003. This was nearly 40 years after his death.
9. Starting with the earliest, which of the following correctly lists these classic arcade games in the chronological order of their release?

Answer: Space Invaders, Asteroids, Centipede, Galaga

Space Invaders was released in 1978. Asteroids came out in 1979. Centipede made its debut in 1980. Galaga first appeared in 1981. All four are widely considered to be among the most influential games in history, right alongside Pac Man and Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong actually inspired a documentary entitled "The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters". I would highly recommend it.
10. The divorce rate in the United States is always a very popular topic of discussion, although hard numbers on the actual rate are very hard to pin down. One reason this task is so difficult is because there are four states that do not keep track of the number of their divorces. Which of the following states DOES keep track of their divorces?

Answer: Wyoming

Colorado, Louisiana, Indiana, and California do not keep track of the number of divorces filed. Because of this, estimates on the United States rate of divorce (per capita) can be made, but are incomplete and therefore not 100% accurate.
