Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which country was the birthplace of pianist Arthur Rubinstein, footballer Robert Lewandowski, writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, and cosmetics entrepreneur Helena Rubinstein?

Answer: Poland

Arthur Rubinstein was born in Lodz in 1887 and moved to Paris in 1904 to embark on a performance career. He eventually settled in the US where he provided soundtracks for several films and won a few Grammys for his recordings. Robert Lewandowski was born in Warsaw in 1988; besides captaining the Polish national team, he won multiple awards including Best FIFA Men's Player award while playing in the German Bundesliga. Isaac Bashevis Singer was born near Warsaw in 1903 and emigrated to the US in 1935.

A Nobel-winning Jewish author, he wrote in Yiddish, and among his works was the story "Yentl, the Yeshiva Boy" which was adapted into the Barbra Streisand film. Helena Rubenstein was born in Krakow in 1872 and emigrated to Australia in 1896 where she embarked on her cosmetics empire using lanolin from the local sheep.

She eventually ended up in the US where she built up her company, sold it for $7 million right before the depression and then bought it back for less than $1 million.

2. Why is there an indentation on the bottom of Champagne bottles?

Answer: To add structural strength to the bottle

The pressure inside a Champagne bottle would blow out a flat bottomed bottle far too frequently. The indentation greatly increases the structural stability with only a minor increase in weight and material. If it wasn't necessary, producers wouldn't spend the extra money.

3. If one were to "goose-step", where would they most likely be?

Answer: In a military parade

Goose-stepping is a way of marching, most often displayed during formal military parades. The bottom leg is kept straight and stiff, while the other leg is raised unbent into the air. The marching step was first invented by the Prussians during the 18th century, but became synonymous with the Wehrmacht of Nazi Germany during WWII.

Many world armed forces still utilize the goose step during their military parades, and to them it signifies discipline.

6. I have ergophobia. What do I fear?

Answer: Work

While I would not go as far as saying I fear work, I do wish that there were easier ways to get work done. Physical symptoms of ergophobia include but are not limited to: rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing, excessive sweating, dry mouth and panic attacks. Of course, these can be a clue that something more serious is wrong. Please see a medical professional if having these symptoms.

7. What do a talking mule who appeared in motion pictures from 1950 to 1956, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, and a 16th century English admiral and privateer who circumnavigated the globe (1577-1580) have in common?

8. Pumpkinville was the name of an early settlement which became what Arizona city with a legendary connection?

Answer: Phoenix

In 1867, Jack Swilling and a few others settled in an area around what is now 28th and Van Buren streets. Pumpkins grew wild in abundance there so they called it Pumpkinville. The following year, a town was laid out about 4 miles east of Pumpkinville and around 20 of the settlers tried to decide the name of the new town. "Lord" Darrell Duppa thought that the birth of the town resembled the rebirth of the Phoenix in Greek legend and suggested it be called "Phoenix".

The name was put forward to the Board of Supervisors of Yavapai County and in May 1868, it was given official recognition. Jack Swilling became the first postmaster of Phoenix.

9. Project Semi-Colon (U.S.), started in 2013, provides help and support to people suffering with mental health issues, such as suicides and addiction. What does the semi-colon, in this context, mean or represent?

Answer: Your story isn't over

Project Semicolon is a non-profit movement which gives hope to people struggling with mental health problems such as suicide, self-injury, and addiction. The semi-colon, in this context, means 'your story isn't over'. The inspiration came from a girl called Amy who had suffered abuse as a youngster, and had self-harmed and attempted suicide. She got a tattoo of a semi-colon and posted it on Facebook with a caption that read: "A semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you, and the sentence is your life. PS: Your Story Isn't Over."

The post traveled across the world and captured the hearts of all who read it. From this, Project Semi-Colon was started on April 16th, 2013. The semicolon tattoo is now one of the most popular small meaningful tattoos and represents that the person with the tattoo is either supporting people with mental health problems or that the person has survived the effects of mental health issues.
