Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Yet another state with two (three?) state anthems!

The story of the state anthem of Arizona is long and winding and will only really be touched on briefly here, because from the looks of things this was as much of a product of a family feud and weird politics as anything intentional.

When Arizona became a state in 1912, it already had a territorial anthem that entered into statehood along with the rest of the land. This anthem had been adopted in 1901 and had quite a bit of support among the residents for keeping it as the state anthem even though one line mentions the fact that Arizona was not yet a state.

"The Arizona March Song", lyrics by Margaret Rowe Clifford, was proposed as the new state's anthem and a war of editorials, telegrams, and genial protests began. The legislature formed a committee, chose the song, and eventually passed it to the governor's desk to be signed into law. However, Arizona has a sneaky loophole in its bylaws that states that if a governor DOESN'T sign a bill then it becomes law anyway after 5 days. The reverse of a pocket veto.

So we have the first anthem.

In 1981, Rex Allen Jr., son of Rex Allen - a cowboy so famous he has his own Arizonan museum - wrote a song about his love for his home state. It was so popular that it was proposed as the official "alternative state anthem" - the only state that has this designation.

Incidentally, both of these anthems come from the same county in Arizona, Cochise.
