Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which British alternative rock band released the song "Live Forever" on their "Definitely Maybe" album in 1994?

Answer: Oasis

The third single of their first album, "Definitely Maybe", "Live Forever" was the band's first major hit charting in the top 10 on two Billboard charts and hitting #2 on the UK Singles chart. Written by the band's guitarist, Noel Gallagher, "Live Forever" persuaded his brother to induct him as a member of the band before the release of their debut album.
The song continues to be one of the band's most popular and has since appeared on the band's greatest hits album, "Stop the Clocks", and as a downloadable single on "Rock Band 2".
2. Some of the most famous immortal figures in pop culture are vampires. Which film has not depicted these frightening creatures?

Answer: The Descent

Whether sparkly and emotional or bloodthirsty and nocturnal, vampires have persisted in film and horror culture. With the "Twilight" series' popularized teenage vampires grossing hundreds of millions in book sales and movie tickets, most people across all ages now recognize vampires as "those which glisten in sunlight". "Let the Right One In", was a Swedish-made vampire film released in 2008 which got its fame from critical acclaim and film festival limited viewings featuring many actual vampire conventions (no sparkly vampires) and "Underworld", starring Kate Beckinsale, was released in 2003 and featured a story about the war between Vampires and Werewolves.

It has since spawned a franchise. Vampire lore states many apotropaic rituals to prevent vampires and numerous methods of extermination (including stakes through the heart, beheading and setting on fire, and a severe allergic reaction to sunlight and garlic). "The Descent", unlike the other three films, takes place underground.

This visceral horror film takes a group of cave explorers into the den of unnatural creatures, trapping them with hungry monsters. Released in 2005, the film was a successful, critically-lauded release from Britain which resulted in a 2009 sequel.
3. In TV's "Heroes", which character possesses the ability to instantly reheal themselves?

Answer: Claire

Claire, once a cheerleader from Odessa, Texas, discovered this unusual power in the first season of the show finding that she could prevent herself from dying or severely wounding herself at any turn. Though she can feel pain, she can instantly recuperate the damages; in effect she is immortal.

When Sylar takes Claire's power in season 3 with his mimetic abilities, the heroes discover that the only way to kill someone in possession of a power such as Claire's is to sever the spinal column from the brain at the neck.

Many of Claire's storylines in "Heroes" seasons revolve around her coping with living an 'ordinary' life with superhuman powers... especially since her father has been working with a Hero-tracking organization for most of her life.
4. Which member of the X-Men was created with adamantium claws and the ability to regenerate almost instantaneously?

Answer: Wolverine

One of the older members of the X-Men in both the comic series, the films, or the animated show, Wolverine was 'created' by scientists who infused his skeleton with strong metals allowing him to increase his speed and dexterity and enabling him to eject claws from his hands to attack enemies.

In addition, he was imbued with the power to heal himself, though he still feels pain during battle. Often short-tempered, Logan is quite gruff to others. In the film series, he is apprehensive about joining the X-Men and he discovers his past in "X-Men 2".

He was the topic of the first "X-Men Origins" film, "Wolverine" in 2009 which grossed almost $400,000,000 overall.
5. In the 2004 film "Troy", which character was invincible and immortal until struck by an arrow in a particular part of the body?

Answer: Achilles

As per Greek myth, the character of Achilles in the 2004 film "Troy" is struck in the heel with an arrow thus sealing his fate. Played by Brad Pitt, Achilles is actually struck by numerous arrows during the final battle of the film though all of them are removed by the heel shot (which was done by Paris, played by Orlando Bloom). According to Greek legend, Achilles' only weak point was in the heel of the foot leading to the term 'Achilles Heel' which refers to the major weakness of someone or something. The film grossed nearly $500,000,000 overall and became one of the most famous epics ever released.

The film also starred Eric Bana, Diane Kruger, Sean Bean, and Owain Yeoman.
6. The third single from their debut album, "Fallen", which of these songs was created by Evanescence?

Answer: My Immortal

Nominated for 'Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group' at the Grammys in 2003, this song was one of the most famous singles off the band's original album, "Fallen". Appearing on four different Billboard charts (peaking at #2 on the Top 40) and hitting #1 on the Canadian charts, the song was one of the most successful to come from the radio-friendly hard rock band.

A live version of the song appeared on the band's second album, "Anywhere but Home". "My Immortal" is a much slower song than the rest of the band's other fare, and like "Bring Me To Life", it appeared on the official soundtrack for "Daredevil".
7. In the "Harry Potter" series, what does Harry need to collect and destroy in order to remove Voldemort's immortality?

Answer: Horcruxes

Seven different Horcruxes can be found in the final two books of the "Harry Potter" series after Professor Slughorn introduces their concept to Harry in "The Half-Blood Prince". Comprising of some early items such as Tom Riddle's Diary (seen in "The Chamber of Secrets") and some integral items such as Harry himself, much of the events in the final two books of the series revolve around their retrieval and destruction to render Voldemort otherwise powerless. Once Harry destroys the Horcruxes, he is able to fight Voldemort in one final duel in the climax of the series.
8. In which video game series does the title character use the Sands of Time to instantly turn back the clock and prevent his death on numerous occasions?

Answer: Prince of Persia

Although the series has been on shelves since the early 1990s, "Prince of Persia" never really picked up as a series until its acquisition by Ubisoft and the "Sands of Time" game for the Gamecube, Xbox, and Playstation 2. This title puts you in the role of the Prince who must use the Sands of Time to solve puzzles and beat bad guys.

In order to use the sands, an hourglass must fill up until you can have a maximum of ten seconds to move back into the past. As a result, the Prince is able to prevent his own death on numerous occasions. Later games in the series, such as the self-titled 2008 revamp ("Prince of Persia") enforced the 'never-die' idea by creating stages in which the Prince is saved by has partner, Elika, who can pick him up any time he falls off a platform and prevent his death.
9. In the "Pirates of the Caribbean" film series, which of these characters removes his heart in order to become immortal?

Answer: Davy Jones

The captain of the Flying Dutchman, Davy Jones makes his first appearance in "The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" in which he commands the ship that houses Will Turner's father (played by Stellan Skarsgård). Over the course of the next two movies, the main characters fight off Krakens and other odd creatures and go to the ends of the world to save Jack Sparrow. All the while, retrieving Davy Jones' heart and destroying it is an objective as the man who does this will be in control of the Flying Dutchman.
Davy Jones is portrayed by Bill Nighy in the films.
10. The actions of John Coffey in this film and novel result in what can only be explained as immortality. He bestows his gift upon Tom Hanks' character in which 1999 movie?

Answer: The Green Mile

Written by Stephen King as a serialized novel in 1996 (over six months), "The Green Mile" was adapted for the screen three years later. Directed by Frank Darabont, the film received four nominations at the Academy Awards though it didn't win any. The film is set on a death row named 'The Green Mile' and the guards receive a prisoner named John Coffey who they discover has unique powers to heal anybody with an affliction. Tom Hanks' character, for example, has a urinary tract infection which is cured.

At the end of the film, Hanks' character is alive and well at 108 years old with no signs of slowing down showing that the act performed on him may have inadvertently caused his immortality.
