Yemen is located in the southern half of the Arabian Peninsula and is bordered by Oman, Saudi Arabia, the Red Sea, the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Aden. Many of the islands in the Red Sea belong to Yemen, such as the Hamish Islands, Kamaran and Perim.

Many of these islands are volcanic. Yemen is the 50th largest country by size in the world. It is roughly 527,970 sq km in size (203,850 sq mi). On the west coast it is mostly hot and humid, the western mountains have a temperate climate although affected by seasonal monsoons, and it is extremely hot and harsh in the desert.

The flag of Yemen was first adopted on the 22nd of May 1990, which was the day that North Yemen and South Yemen joined to form one nation. The red symbolises bloodshed of martyrs as well as representing unity, the white signifies a bright future and the black represents a dark past.

The national motto is ""Allah, al-Watan, ath-Thawrah, al-Wahdah", which means "God, Country, Revolution, Unity". The national anthem is "United Republic".

The Old Walled City of Sana'a is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. According to legend, the city was formed by Shem, one of the sons of Noah. It was known as "Azal" in ancient times.
