Answer: Desert climate

Chad endures a mostly desert climate. The annual rainfall (yearly) is 50mm in the Saharan north, 300-600mm in the Sahelian Belt, and over 900mm in the southern Sahel region, a more fertile savannah zone. Chad is landlocked and bordered by six countries, which are: Libya, Sudan, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger, going clockwise from north.

The CFA Central African Franc was introduced to Chad in 1945, replacing the French Equatorial African Franc. CFA, translated from French, stands for 'Financial Cooperation in Central Africa'. The Euro is also an accepted currency in Chad, owing to its connection with France.

Chadian Arabic is a version of Arabic used for every-day speech. Over 120 indigenous languages are spoken in addition to the official languages, and examples include Sara, Sango and Tama.

The flag of Chad is best described as a vertical tricolor with a blue, yellow and red stripe. Blue symbolises the sky, hope and water. Yellow, the sun and desert. Red symbolises progress, unity and sacrifice. The flag was adopted on 1959, and has remained since achieving independence from France.

Millet is a whole grain. It is often consumed as a paste, or as balls dipped in Chadian sauces, often comprised of fish, tomatoes, onions and/or spices. In the south, this dish is called biya, yet in the north it is called aiysh. Chadians also cook with rice and fish, and love a variety of meats such as mutton, beef and chicken. Wheat is not readily available in Chad, therefore it is not a staple food.

The ruling political party has been the Patriotic Salvation Movement for some decades, however, there are many minority parties as well. Despite dissent, Deby has won several elections since 1990. There has been suspicion about the legitimacy of the elections and the use of oil profits for personal gain. Because of these reasons, and others, there have been rebellions against Deby, which have resulted in many casualties.

N'Djamena was founded in 1900 as Fort Lamy, named after an army officer killed in the Battle of Kousseri a few days earlier. It was a major trading city, and has remained so in the modern day. The change of name was to remove foreign influences and allow Chad to fully state its independence.

Answer: Islam

According to the 1993 census, 54% of Chadians were Muslim, 34% Christian, 10% animist and 3% atheist. In general, Muslims are mostly found in the northern and eastern areas of Chad, whilst Christians, animists and less well-known religions are focused in southern Chad. Despite numerous civil conflicts in Chad, these people tend to co-exist in peace.

Answer: Kakaki

The kakaki is a long metal trumpet used in traditional ceremonial music. It is always played by men, and is played only during big events, often as a signal. The instrument is said to signify power, and it is also known as waza, or malakat.

Answer: Zakouma National Park

Zakouma National Park is situated in the south of Chad, between Sahr and Am Timan. In the rainy season, herds of up to 1000 elephants can be seen leaving the park to avoid the muddy terrain. Rare African birds are also housed there, in addition to a variety of mammals.

It was created in 1963 and, whilst poachers and civil conflicts have affected life in the park, a restoration program in 1989 supported by the EU has helped to protect it.
