Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania lies near the N40 latitude line. If we were to travel east on the same line, which city would we hit?

Answer: Madrid, Spain

Madrid, Spain lies nearest to the N40 latitude line. Paris and London lie closer to the N50 latitude line. Cairo lies on the N30 line.
2. Move your finger to the Prime Meridian line, which is the 0 degree mark for the longitude lines. Which of these places do not fall on or near the Prime Meridian?

Answer: Cape Town, South Africa

The cities London and Accra lie near the Prime Meridian. The Prime Meridian also touches the South Pole at the S90 latitude mark. Cape Town, South Africa lies further east on the E20 longitude line.
3. The next line we will follow is the equator, which divides the northern and southern hemispheres. If we follow the line, which of these countries does the equator not directly cross?

Answer: Equatorial Guinea

Despite what its name might imply, the equator does not directly cross any land belonging to Equatorial Guinea. The small nation in Africa lies several degrees north of the line. The equator does directly cross the nations of Indonesia, Brazil and Ecuador.
4. Hong Kong lies just below the Tropic of Cancer. If we run our fingers along the line, which city would we come nearest to?

Answer: Havana, Cuba

Havana, Cuba also lies very close to the Tropic of Cancer line. The Tropic of Cancer line lies approximately 23-24 degrees north of the equator. The tropic lines are boundaries that separate the tropical and temperate climate zones of the earth.
5. Now place you finger on the W50 longitude line anywhere in Brazil. If you run your finger straight north on the W50 line, where would you end up?

Answer: Greenland

The W50 longitude line directly crosses Greenland. While it comes close to Canada, it does not touch any land there. Iceland lies on the W20 longitude line, and you would not touch the United States until the W70 longitude line.
6. Now place your finger on the Tropic of Capricorn line. Which of these countries does it not cross?

Answer: New Zealand

New Zealand lies south of the Tropic of Capricorn line. The Tropic of Capricorn lies approximately 23-24 degrees south of the equator, opposite of the Tropic of Cancer. It crosses Australia, Brazil (in the south) and South Africa (northeast corner).
7. The Antimeridian, or the 180 degree longitude line, intersects the United States.

Answer: True

Unlike the Equator which crosses the entire globe, the Prime Meridian exists only in one hemisphere. The line opposite the Prime Meridian, at 180 degrees West, is the Antimeridian. It intersects the United States as it crosses through the Aleutian Islands, which are a part of the state of Alaska.
8. Now we begin at Miami, Florida, which lies close to W80 longitude line. Which of these cities is closest to the same line either north or south?

Answer: Toronto, Canada

Toronto, Ontario, Canada lies closest to the W80 longitude line. New York, Bogota and Santiago all lie further east.
9. Find the Arctic Circle line and follow it around. Which of these countries has no land above the circle?

Answer: United Kingdom

The Arctic Circle is a boundary line which separate the temperate and polar climate zones. It lies roughly 65 degrees north of the equator. The United States crosses the line in Alaska; the circle cuts through the length of Russia and also crosses Greenland, which is a territory of Denmark. No part of the United Kingdom lies above the Arctic Circle.
10. Finally, start near Shanghai, China where the N30 latitude line and the and E120 longitude line intersect. Run your fingers north along the E120 degree line, crossing the North Pole, continue on the opposite line and stop at the S30 latitude line. Where you right now?

Answer: Argentina

If you run your finger on the E120 longitude line north past the North Pole, you would be on the W60 longitude line. Running your finger south on W60, when you reach the S30 line on the opposite hemisphere, Stop! This is the spot directly opposite from where we started. If you were to drill straight through the Earth at the original spot in China, you would wind up in Argentina.
