Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Here is information about each of these 15 nations, including their borders and neighbours:

Lesotho is a landlocked enclave, which means it is completely surrounded by South Africa. The border is approximately 909 km (565 miles) long and has numerous crossing points. This geographical feature makes Lesotho dependent on South Africa for trade and access to the outside world.

San Marino is a landlocked microstate surrounded by Italy. The border is about 39 km (24 miles) long. Despite its small size, San Marino maintains its independence and has a distinct cultural and historical identity, largely preserved through tourism and banking.

Vatican City, the smallest independent state in the world, is enclosed within Rome, Italy. The border is approximately 3.2 km (2 miles) long, marked by walls that were historically used for defensive purposes. It is the spiritual and administrative centre of the Roman Catholic Church.

Brunei is located on the northern coast of Borneo and borders the Malaysian state of Sarawak. The border is approximately 381 km (237 miles) long. Brunei's rich oil and gas reserves are mainly located along this border and contribute significantly to its economy.

The Dominican Republic and Haiti share a 376km (234 miles) border on the island of Hispaniola. This border is characterised by significant cultural, economic and linguistic differences, with ongoing issues relating to immigration, trade and environmental management. Efforts have been made to improve relations, particularly in the areas of trade and migration management.

The Gambia is a narrow strip of land around the Gambia River, bordered on three sides by Senegal. The border is approximately 749 km (465 miles) long. This unique geographical configuration has led to close economic and political ties, as well as occasional tensions.

The United Kingdom and Ireland share a border of approximately 499 km (310 miles) between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. This border has been a focus of historical conflict, particularly during the Troubles, but the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 has brought significant peace and co-operation, although Brexit has introduced new complexities.

Monaco is a city-state on the French Riviera that shares a 5.47km border with France. The border is easily traversed, and Monaco and France enjoy a special relationship that includes economic, cultural and social ties.

Papua New Guinea occupies the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, while Indonesia controls the western half (the provinces of Papua and West Papua). The border is approximately 820 km (510 miles) long and crosses rugged terrain, contributing to administrative and security challenges.

Portugal and Spain share a border of approximately 1,214 km (754 miles), known as "La Raya". This border is one of the oldest and most stable in Europe, reflecting a long history of peaceful coexistence and cooperation between the two countries.

Qatar is a peninsula bordering Saudi Arabia to the south, with a border of approximately 87 km (54 miles). The border has been a point of tension, particularly during the 2017-2021 Gulf Cooperation Council crisis, when several neighbouring countries imposed a blockade on Qatar.

The border between South Korea and North Korea, known as the Korean Demilitarised Zone (DMZ), is approximately 250 km (155 miles) long. This heavily fortified border is one of the most militarised and tense in the world, a legacy of the Korean War, which ended in an armistice in 1953.

Timor-Leste occupies the eastern part of the island of Timor, while Indonesia controls the western part. The border is approximately 253 km (157 miles) long. Following a violent struggle for independence, Timor-Leste became independent in 2002 and relations with Indonesia have since improved considerably.

Two countries dropped out of the list in 2022. Canada and Denmark used to be countries with only one neighbour (the United States and Germany respectively). They now share a short border on Hans Island, with Canada's Nunavut on one side and Denmark's Greenland on the other.
