Question 1 of 10
1. If you want to "see the South," you could do worse than starting off on the majestic Aconcagua, which is the highest mountain in South America. However, its superlative height goes beyond that - which is the LARGEST area listed that has Aconcagua as its highest point? Hint

Question 2 of 10
2. The Argentinian port town of Ushuaia, which is the capital of Tierra del Fuego, is pictured here and boasts which geographic distinction that also makes it a perfect vantage point from which to "see the South"? (Hint: This distinction has been disputed by Puerto Williams). Hint

Question 3 of 10
3. Argentina isn't the only country that has southern extremes - Chile also contains a southern point that's a great place to "see the South," but quite dangerous to get to by sea. Which southern point of Tierra del Fuego is on the Hornos island and defined the treacherous route depicted here? Hint

Question 4 of 10
4. The light tan area shown here is the decidedly inhospitable Atacama, so we can be glad that we're seeing the South from this aerial vantage point! Which nation does not contain any of this exceedingly arid, unforgiving desert? Hint

Question 5 of 10
5. Now we're sailing about, hoping to "see the south" from a more watery perspective. Just like the mountain, we've found a true "high point" to kick off our mission. Which of these is the highest South American waterway we could "navigate" in? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. Still on water, we come to the Iguazu Falls. Not only is this a gorgeous site, but it also marks the point where Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay all meet. What is the plateau over which these falls run? Hint

Question 7 of 10
7. After our nice dip into the waters, let's climb again, this time a volcano here shown in a Frederic Church painting. Which of these Ecuadorean peaks, here depicted, is Ecuador's highest-elevation active volcano and part of South America's contribution to the Pacific Ring of Fire? (We shouldn't stay long at this photo-worthy location). Hint

Question 8 of 10
8. This beautiful image of the Cordillera Real (the mountains in the background) is made possible because of the flat expanse in the foreground. This expanse is a high plateau in the Andes, the largest high plateau outside of Tibet. What is the common name for this beautifully flat Bolivian (with some Peruvian/Chilean acreage) area that provides this amazing view? Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. Both Buenos Aires and Montevideo are on the sides of this river basin shown here, which is sometimes considered a gulf due to its width - the greatest width of any river basin in the world. Which river is this, around which the most densely populated areas of Argentina and Uruguay are found? Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Well, it looks like we're done seeing the South. Here is an image of the Santa Catalina island, and it marks a real end of our journey as the northernmost part of South America. We're seeing the very tip of the place that can even be called "The South" - but which nation does this area belong to? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If you want to "see the South," you could do worse than starting off on the majestic Aconcagua, which is the highest mountain in South America. However, its superlative height goes beyond that - which is the LARGEST area listed that has Aconcagua as its highest point?

Answer: West AND South Hemispheres

The Northeastern hemisphere dominates the world's tallest mountains, boasting 188 of them taller than Aconcagua - however, the Western and Southern Hemispheres have no other peaks taller than the South American peak.
2. The Argentinian port town of Ushuaia, which is the capital of Tierra del Fuego, is pictured here and boasts which geographic distinction that also makes it a perfect vantage point from which to "see the South"? (Hint: This distinction has been disputed by Puerto Williams).

Answer: Southernmost city in the world

Ushuaia is the "southernmost city in the world," lying as it does on a bay bordering the Beagle Channel. It's so far south that its railway is called the "End of the World Train," and its tourism is largely based on its exotic, extreme location.
3. Argentina isn't the only country that has southern extremes - Chile also contains a southern point that's a great place to "see the South," but quite dangerous to get to by sea. Which southern point of Tierra del Fuego is on the Hornos island and defined the treacherous route depicted here?

Answer: Cape Horn

Cape Horn is the southern area of Chile on the Hornos island, and traversing the area was necessary for Atlantic-to-Pacific sea travel until the construction of the Panama Canal. The Drake Passage is the name of the waterway south of the Cape, and the Straits of Magellan are to the north.
4. The light tan area shown here is the decidedly inhospitable Atacama, so we can be glad that we're seeing the South from this aerial vantage point! Which nation does not contain any of this exceedingly arid, unforgiving desert?

Answer: Ecuador

The Atacama desert is so dry, there are places that go without rain for several years, and some places have gone without "significant" rainfall for centuries. As an added bonus, it's the oldest desert on earth and has experienced some form of extreme lack of rain for continuous millennia. It has area in Peru as well as Chile, Argentina, and Bolivia.
5. Now we're sailing about, hoping to "see the south" from a more watery perspective. Just like the mountain, we've found a true "high point" to kick off our mission. Which of these is the highest South American waterway we could "navigate" in?

Answer: Lake Titicaca

This Peruvian/Bolivian lake is considered the highest navigable waterway in the world, and it also has distinction as the largest lake in South America by volume. (Maracaibo has the largest surface area.) The elevation is due to Lake Titicaca's positioning in the Andes mountains.
6. Still on water, we come to the Iguazu Falls. Not only is this a gorgeous site, but it also marks the point where Brazil, Argentina, and Paraguay all meet. What is the plateau over which these falls run?

Answer: Parana Plateau

Iguazu Falls is where the Iguazu River flows over the plateau, and hits the Parana River. This intersection is a tourist attraction for its three-country border point, and even Eleanor Roosevelt was impressed by it. Iguazu also has the second-highest flow of any waterfall (after Niagara) due to its unique breadth.

Answer: Cotopaxi

Cotopaxi, a legendary volcano that has taken on a mythic life of its own through native and nonnative stories and depictions, is a still-active volcano relatively near Quito. Its most recent eruption was in 1940, and a particularly large eruption would pose a great risk to Ecuadoreans.

Answer: Altiplano

La Paz, a capital of Bolivia, actually is situated on the Altiplano (and that's hardly the only major city there), which shows the extent of this expanse. The other answer choices are all large plateaus, but the Bolivian Plateau, also known as the Altiplano, is the only Andean one. Even though it looks like plains, don't mistake this area for lowlands, as this flat expanse is at 14,000 feet, so bring along some oxygen!
9. Both Buenos Aires and Montevideo are on the sides of this river basin shown here, which is sometimes considered a gulf due to its width - the greatest width of any river basin in the world. Which river is this, around which the most densely populated areas of Argentina and Uruguay are found?

Answer: Rio de la Plata

The Rio de la Plata (river of silver, or River Plate) is the confluence of the Uruguay River and Parana Rivers, among others. It is a mix of fresh water and salt water. One way to remember that this river is near Buenos Aires is the song from "Evita" where Buenos Aires is mentioned along with several features of the town, including a belted declaration of "Rio de la Plata!"
10. Well, it looks like we're done seeing the South. Here is an image of the Santa Catalina island, and it marks a real end of our journey as the northernmost part of South America. We're seeing the very tip of the place that can even be called "The South" - but which nation does this area belong to?

Answer: Colombia

Colombia is the proud owner of the extreme northernmost point in South America. It also has Punta Gallinas, the northernmost point of mainland South America - if you want to see the north of the south, Colombia is the nation to seek out!
