Answer: The Stahlhelm

The Stahlhelm (literally 'Steel Helmet') was a nationalistic war veteran's organization. He joined the SA in 1934 and did not become a Nazi party member until 1937.
2. Mengele served in the Waffen SS Wiking Division for three years, what was the highest medal he received?

Answer: Iron Cross, 1st Class

Mengele was very proud of this award and was known to refer frequently to his combat experiences as a source of his authority. At Auschwitz, he almost lost it when it fell off while he was riding around on his bike!
3. Mengele became a member of the SS in 1938 and managed to be promoted to the rank of captain. What is the SS equivalent of this rank?

Answer: Hauptsturmführer

Sturmbannführer = Major. Hauptscharführer = Master Sergeant. Obersturmführer = First Lieutenant
4. When did Mengele officially arrive at Auschwitz?

Answer: May 30th 1943

March 16th is Josef Mengele's birthday. June 12th is Otto Skorzeny's birthday
May 28th is Joseph "Sepp" Dietrich's birthday.

All three men were members of the SS and all three managed died free men.
5. Mengele often did ramp selections when the trains arrived at Auschwitz. In fact, he seemed to relish the task that most Auschwitz doctors loathed. What accessory did Mengele always brandish when he did selections?

Answer: A riding crop

Victims said he was always perfectly groomed, and immaculately dressed in a striking black SS uniform, partly in order to contrast with the ragged appearance of the newly arrived prisoners. He would use his riding crop as a weapon if any of the arrivals annoyed him or as a means of mocking or making fun of the victims.
6. Mengele was known for having a passion for cleanliness and perfection, so he would send physically healthy people to the gas chambers if he saw something that offended him. Which physical blemish(es) was he appalled by?

Answer: All of these

He loathed physical blemishes such as these, and if he saw the smallest physical flaw on any man, woman, or child, he would immediately send them to the line to be gassed. Conversely, it is said that he spared prisoners because he appreciated their physical beauty!
7. Mengele's passion for research on twins is well known, but what other kind of condition was he interested in?

Answer: Noma

Noma is a gangrenous condition of the face and mouth, it is caused by poor diet and living conditions. It was particularly prevelant in the Gypsy camp, primarily in children. Mengele was also interested in dwarves, hunchbacks, and hermaphrodites. He considered these disorders as proof of the prisoners' racial inferiority.
8. Mengele was also interested in eyes, particularly eye color. What is the name of the eye condition that he was most interested in?

Answer: Heterochromia

Heterochromia is the condition in which two eyes of a person are of different colors. Rumor was that he was conducting these "experiments" in order to achieve the desired blue eye color in Aryan children. He would inject the eyes of children with harmful chemicals in an attempt to create the desired affect.

Not surprisingly, he never succeeded in these experiments, and a few children went blind due to his cruelty and psuedo science.
9. Mengele seemed particularly fond of the Gypsy camp at Auschwitz, especially the children, but the entire camp was liquidated in 1944. Why was this drastic step taken?

Answer: An outbreak of typhus

Mengele was furious and blamed the prisoner doctors for negligence which resulted in the epidemic reaching the proportions that it did, endangering the whole of Auschwitz. All of the 4,000 inhabitants were sent to the gas chamber. Mengele had actually opposed the annihilation but was more than ready to carry out his orders with abundant energy.
10. Mengele managed to escape Allied justice after the war and fled to South America like so many other Nazi war criminals. He is said to have died in 1979 in Brazil while swimming in the ocean. What was the cause of his death?

Answer: Not known for certain

After the power he had wielded in Auschwitz, the terror he had caused, Mengele ended up a scared and paranoid old man, depending on others to shield and protect him. Mossad came close to capturing him but he was considered a secondary target behind their prime target, Adolf Eichmann. He died a far easier death than those that he had tortured and murdered, and unfortunately, it was not at the end of a hangmen's noose.
