Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Please name the Nazi leader who headed the Foreign Affairs Department from 1933 until 1945.

Answer: Alfred Rosenberg

In 1933 he was appointed the Head of the Foreign Policy Department and in 1939 he founded 'The Institute for the Study of the Jewish Question'. He strongly believed there was a 'master race' that was 'Aryan-Nordic' in origin. He was an evil force in the treatment of the Jewish people, especially as Minister for the Occupied Eastern Territories from 1941-45.

He was tried for his crimes at Nuremberg, convicted, and hanged on October 16, 1946.
2. Who commanded the Afrika-Korps?

Answer: Erwin Rommel

Nicknamed the "Desert Fox", he was known as a professional soldier and went 'by the book' in his treatment of prisoners of war. Toward the end of the war, he knew the battle was essentially lost. Hitler, however, continued to fight a losing battle until Germany was destroyed and many more lives were lost. Rommel was also implicated in the plot of July 20, 1944.
3. Which of these Nazi leaders matched the 'Aryan-Nordic' ideal in looks?

Answer: None

There was not one tall blonde 'god' noted within the higher ranks of Nazi leadership. Himmler sponsored an SS expedition to Tibet in search of the lost 'gods' of the Aryan civilization that he imagined were German ancestors. He also searched for the lost city of 'Atlantis', but to no avail.
4. Which of these Nazis headed the SS and police in Lublin, Poland, from 1939-1943? He supervised the liquidation of the Warsaw and Bialystock ghettos and the 'resettlement' of large numbers of Poles in reservations and of Jews in labor camps.

Answer: Odilo Globocnik

The name is pronounced glo-bots-nik, with the stress on the second syllable. "Odious Odilo", as one is tempted to call him, committed suicide by biting his potassium cyanide capsule on 31 May 1945 when British soldiers arrested him in southern Austria. Arthur Greiser was governor of the Wartheland, which consisted of the onetime Prussian province of Posen, enlarged to include Lodz. Hans Frank was the governor of the "Generalgouvernement" of Poland.

He was tried, convicted and hanged as a major war criminal at Nuremberg.

Heydrich headed the Reich Main Security Office from 1939-1942 and was Deputy Governor of Bohemia and Moravia. He was, more generally, Himmler's de facto "number two".
5. Name the head of the Gestapo in Lyon.

Answer: Klaus Barbie

Barbie was referred to as 'The Butcher of Lyon' for his torture of prisoners. He was cold and unfeeling, with a total lack of compassion for anyone that was not the Nazi ideal.
6. Name the notorious Commandant of Buchenwald.

Answer: Karl Otto Koch

He was at Buchenwald from 1937 till 1941. After financial irregularities came to light at Buchenwald he was sent to Majdenek as a 'punishment'. (Later, when the full extent of his embezzlement and theft emerged he was hanged by the SS in April 1945). He had a lovely wife, Ilse Koch.

She was known for her cruelty as well. She especially enjoyed making household articles from the skins of prisioners. She had a fondness for tattooed skin for lamp shades. She committed suicide while in prison in 1967.
7. Name the Commandant of Drancy Camp, which was on the edge of Paris.

Answer: Alois Brunner

He was Adolf Eichmann's assistant. He lived in a beautiful mansion with lovely landscaping that also had a basement with torture chambers. He played a major role in the deportation of Jews to death camps. Of the 23,500 people he deported from France only 1,645 survived. He also deported 47,000 Jews from Austria, 44,000 from Greece and 14,000 from Slovakia. Few survived.
8. Please name the Nazi leader and founder of 'Der Stürmer', a Nazi weekly newspaper.

Answer: Julius Streicher

"Der Stürmer" was virulently antisemitic and often pornographic. It was the source of most Nazi antisemitic iconography. From 1941 on Streicher repeatedly and stridently called for the extermination of the Jews. When Gauleiter of Franconia he took a particular interest in juvenile offenders, some of whom he abused in their prison cells. Had he not been one of Hitler's favorites, this could have landed him in very serious trouble.

The Nuremberg Tribunal convicted him of crimes against humanity in the form of incitement to genocide, and he was hanged on October 16, 1946.
9. Please name the leader of the Hitler Youth from 1933 on.

Answer: Baldur von Schirach

He was the leader of Hitler Youth from 1933 until 1940. He then was moved to Gauleiter in Vienna from 1940 until 1945.
10. Please name the co-founder of the SS. He was Hitler's personal assistant.

Answer: Julius Schaub

He was one of Hitler's most trusted. He was his chief aide. His SS number was 7. He left the Führerbunker on April 22, 1945. He died 12/27/1967. Also Karl Brandt, Hitler's personal physician was directly involved in the formation of the SS. Himmler along with his number one helper Reinhardt Heydrich formed the SS into a more powerful force with increased numbers and expansion beyond just the personal protection of Hitler and his higher ranking staff members. Theodor Eicke helped with the organization of the SS Camp Doctors.
SS Exectives:
1925-1926: Schreck
1926-1927: Berchtold
1927-1929: Heiden
1929-1945: Himmler with his right hand man, Heydrich (from 1931)
All aided in the 'Final Solution of the Jewish Question'
