Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:

Lincoln, along with an audience of about 15,000, had to endure a two-hour speech by Edward Everett, one of the country's leading orators. Everett later wrote to Lincoln, "I wish that I could flatter myself that I had come as near to the central idea of the occasion in two hours as you did in two minutes".

Lincoln's Gettysburg Address has a special place in American history. It is remarkable in its brief and simplistic lines. He never once expressed triumphant fervor at the Union's victory. He never even mentioned the Union or the Confederacy. He was passionate about ONE nation. His use of the words "dedicate (or a derivative thereof)", devotion, and nation are almost religious in their context.

Some scholars believe the president just jotted down a few notes while on the train from Washington. Others believe Lincoln recognized an opportunity to once again bring the country together and therefore chose his remarks carefully. What does it matter.
