Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to tradition when was Rome founded ?

Answer: 753 BC

Rome, according to legend, was founded by Romulus. When they had been reared by a wolf Romulus slew Remus after he jumped over the walls he was building around his new city.
2. In 387 BC Rome was sacked by which barbarian people?

Answer: The Gauls

This was a humiliating event for the fledgling Roman state. The Gauls, however, did not sack everything. The Capitoline Hill was saved by the squawking of alarmed geese and held out until the Gauls had left.
3. Complete the title. This Roman is always known as ' _____ the Censor'.

Answer: Cato

Cato the Censor was an interesting character - conservative, petty and mean. He once confiscated a man's horse because the unfortunate gentleman in question was too fat! But no doubt the horse itself would have been quite happy to be released from its obese load.
4. What do the well known initials SPQR stand for ?

Answer: Senatus Populusque Romanus

These initials would be found stamped everywhere from the drains of the Clocoa Maxima (Rome's great sewer) to the standards of the legions shivering in winter on the banks of the Danube.
5. In which year was Julius Caesar assassinated?

Answer: 44 BC

Caesar was assassinated by members of the senate who opposed his perceived attempt to turn Rome into a dictatorship with himself at the head.
6. Complete the Triumvirate! Caesar, Pompey and _______?

Answer: Crassus

The triumvirate was an alliance between these three men. It was intended to strengthen their political power but it ended with death of Crassus in 53 BC.
7. With the fall of the Republic, Augustus became emperor in 27 BC and was succeeded on his death by Tiberius, who on his death was succeeded by whom?

Answer: Caligula

Caligula was evil and despotic, spending vast sums of money on huge pleasure boats and other extravagances. His rule however was mercifully short and he was succeeded by the Emperor Claudius.
8. Claudius died, giving way to Nero. The year of Nero's death was the year of the four emperors. Which year was it ?

Answer: 68-69 AD

The year of the four emperors was one of civil war and strife. The first of these emperors was Galba, followed by Otho, then Vitellius - and finally Vespasian, who was by far the best of these emperors. It was he who began the building of the Colosseum.
9. Skipping on past Titus, Domitian, Nerva one comes to the man who conquered Dacia. Who was he?

Answer: Trajan

Trajan is widely considered to be the greatest Roman emperors. He was loved by the people and under him the Roman empire reached its greatest extent due to his conquests not only in Dacia but also in the Middle East.
10. Jumping ahead a few centuries, the Roman empire had split into an Eastern and Western empire. Who was the last Western emperor ?

Answer: Romulus Augustulus

If you chose Odacer then you need to do some serious revision because he is the man who overthrew the West Roman empire.

NB.There is much more I could fit into the quiz but sadly all good things must come to an end and, like the Roman empire my quiz must end. I hope, however, that unlike that ill-fated empire I will make a part two of this quiz.
