Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Michigan and Ohio State have a long rivalry in football, but the fight between the two states started in 1835 over one city on the border. Ohio ultimately won. What city were they fighting for?

Answer: Toledo

Toledo was important to both states as a port city on Lake Erie. At the time of the border dispute (1835-36) Ohio was a state and had official representation in congress while Michigan was only a US territory and had no such representation. As a sort of consolation prize, congress gave Michigan the Upper Peninsula to soften the blow of losing Toledo.
2. In 1849, Mormon pioneers originally proposed a state that would have included parts of present day southern California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Idaho, and Oregon. What was this state called?

Answer: Deseret

The State of Deseret was never recognized by Congress. Eventually the Utah Territory was established with just parts of Utah and Nevada. In 1896, Utah became a state with the boundaries that exist today.
3. During the American Civil War, one of the southern states that seceded from the Union broke into two parts - one siding with the Union, the other becoming part of the Confederacy. Which state was created when this happened?

Answer: West Virginia

All of present-day West Virginia was originally part of the State of Virginia until the Civil War. West Virginia is known for its mountains and mining operations.
4. If you thought US state borders were set, you might be surprised to know that Georgia and Tennessee had argued about their border in 2013. Historically, why has this border dispute been so important to Georgia?

Answer: Georgia wants the water that is just over the border

Georgia is desperate for water - especially for the Atlanta area - and the Georgia-Tennessee border is a few dozen yards from the Tennessee River.
5. The historic Mason-Dixon line, completed in 1767, line forms part of the border of which of these states?

Answer: Pennsylvania

In addition to Pennsylvania, the Mason-Dixon Line also form part of the borders for Maryland and West Virginia.
6. These two states faced off in a border dispute called the "Honey War" in the 1830s.

Answer: Iowa-Missouri

The nickname "honey war" came about because some beehives in trees were cut down on the border by Missourians in an attempt to compensate for their losses.
7. Five U.S. states and four Canadian provinces all have a border on what line?

Answer: The 49th Parallel

Washington, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, and Minnesota all border Canada on the 49th parallel.
8. The USA has bought land from other countries several times to form the country's modern borders. In terms of square miles, which purchase was the largest?

Answer: Louisiana

-The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 bought approx. 828,000 square miles from France.
-Alaska was purchased in 1867 from Russia and was approx. 580,000 square miles.
-Florida was purchased from Spain in 1819 for about 60,000 square miles.
-The Gadsden Purchase of 1853 bought about 30,000 square miles from Mexico.
9. Using the Mississippi River and latitude lines as borders for one state has created a peninsula that belongs to that state, but by land is only connected to Tennessee. What is this place called?

Answer: Kentucky Bend

Kentucky Bend is about 3 miles away from the rest of Kentucky. It is completely surrounded by Missouri on 3 sides (across the river) and Tennessee on the south.
10. State borders have been disputed many times over the years - many going all the way to the US Supreme Court before being settled. Which of these US states has NOT been part of a US Supreme Court ruling on borders?

Answer: Hawaii

New Jersey v. Delaware, New Jersey v. New York, Maryland v. West Virginia, Georgia v. South Carolina, Florida v. Georgia - and the list goes on! Hawaii, having no land borders with other states, hasn't had a major dispute with another state over borders.
