Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The music in the 'Overture' appears later in the show in which song?

Answer: Trial Before Pilate

It is during 'Trial Before Pilate' that Jesus is lashed 39 times. The 'Overture' was recorded by English rock band Deep Purple.
2. Which character does not appear in the song 'What's The Buzz/Strange Thing Mystifying'?

Answer: Caiaphas

Jesus' apostles are getting impatient and want to know what his plans are. Mary tries to calm Jesus down but Judas thinks that by having any involvement with Mary, a prostitute, Jesus is going to get them all in trouble.
3. In the song 'Everything's Alright' Mary annoints Jesus with oil. Why does Judas angrily protest?

Answer: The money spent on the oil could have gone to the poor

Jesus claims that while there will always be poor people he himself won't be around for much longer, and Judas should make the most of the time he has left with him. "Think while you still have me, move while you still see me. You'll be lost, you'll be sorry when I'm gone".
4. In the song 'This Jesus Must Die' Caiaphas, Annas and the other Jewish priests say that Jesus' popularity is now out of control, and say he is bigger than what?

Answer: Than John was when John did his baptism thing

Caiaphas believes that Jesus may seem like a threat to Roman authorities and the consequences of this could mean all Jews could suffer and not just those who follow Jesus. He sings, "So like John before him this Jesus must die".
5. What is the next line in the song 'I Don't Know How To Love Him'? "Should I bring him down, ... "?

Answer: Should I scream and shout

The song has been recorded by many famous singers including Yvonne Elliman, Cilla Black and Shirley Bassey. Judas sings a reprise of the song during 'Judas' Suicide'.
6. In the song 'Gethsemane' Jesus sings of his doubt and fear as his death approaches. Who is Jesus addressing in this song?

Answer: God

At the end of the song Jesus accepts that this is his fate and if it is God's will he will die. "I will drink your cup of poison. Nail me to your cross and break me". Straight after this song Judas arrives with Roman soldiers and Jesus is arrested.
7. Which actor played Jesus in the 1973 film version?

Answer: Ted Neeley

Ted Neeley was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance as was Carl Anderson for his Judas. Ian Gillan played Jesus on the original album before it was performed on Broadway and Tony Hadley from the band Spandau Ballet played Jesus in the 1996 Radio 2 production opposite The Who's Roger Daltrey, who played Judas.
8. Which actor played the role of Judas in the original Broadway production?

Answer: Ben Vereen

Ben Vereen was understudied by Carl Anderson when he took poorly and the two actors ended up playing the role on alternate nights. Ted Neeley was actually an understudy for the role of Jesus which was played by Jeff Fenholt. Along with Yvonne Elliman, who played Mary Magdalene on the original album, both Kurt Yaghjian and Barry Dennen reprised their roles of Annas and Pilate in the 1973 film version.
9. In 'Trial Before Pilate' Pilate reluctantly has Jesus put to death. Fill in the blank: "I wash my hands of your demolition, die if you want to, you innocent ____".

Answer: Puppet

Pilate has pleaded with Jesus to defend himself but Jesus says "Everything is fixed and you can't change it". Pilate dreamed of Jesus' death ('Pilate's Dream') and thinks he will be held responsible.
10. What is the name of the instrumental played at the end of the show after Jesus has been killed?

Answer: John Nineteen: Forty-One

The show ends with Jesus dying on the cross, and his resurrection is not shown in any songs, though some productions have added his resurrection in the instrumental at the end of even the curtain call. 'John Nineteen: Forty-One' has largely the same melody as 'Gethsemane'.
