Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. More than likely we all learned that nouns are those words that are persons, places, or things. What else can be considered nouns, going beyond the "thing" category?

Answer: all choices

Yes, ideas, qualities, and concepts are considered nouns. Those things, those ideas, qualities, and concepts like beauty, truth, honesty, and perfection exist, yet even though we cannot physically touch them (although our mind does) they are real, and are considered nouns.
2. True or false: According to English grammatical rules, proper nouns are capitalized.

Answer: true

Common nouns are those everyday items like computer, car, or candy bar. Proper nouns are specific nouns such as Dell computers, or a Honda, or a Hershey's chocolate bar. You can tell it's a proper noun because it is capitalized. (Twentieth-century poet e.e. cummings is the exception to the rule, but he left his name uncapitalized as a stylization.)
3. Nouns can also be concrete or abstract. Pick out the series of concrete nouns.

Answer: bed, flower, pickle

Concrete items are those items that our senses can touch in some way. A bed, flower, and a pickle all utilize at least one of the five senses. Yellowstone National Park is both a proper noun and a concrete noun, but honor is an abstract noun, and bear is definitely concrete.

The same applies to Betty (concrete/proper), mother (common/concrete), and kindness (abstract/common). Truth, honesty, and beauty are all abstract nouns. Notice how a noun can be more than one type at the same time?
4. Another type of noun is the compound noun. These nouns are two or more words that come together to make one word, as in blueberry. They can also be separated by hyphens to become one word, or they can be single words that are separate but read as one word. With this in mind, is Grand Coulee Dam a compound noun?

Answer: yes

Yes, it is a proper compound noun. Brother-in-law is an example of a hyphenated compound noun, and secretary of state is another example of separate words reading as one word.
5. Aah, a favorite of mine: collective nouns. These are nouns that are a group of something. Words like team, cluster, orchestra, bunch are all collectives. Do you know what you call a group of baboons?

Answer: congress

Really, a group of baboons is considered a congress--says something about politics, perhaps. There is the pride of lions, a chain of islands, and also the covey of quails. Mmmm, I feel a quiz on collective nouns coming on. Stay tuned...
6. Nouns can also be singular and plural. Pick out the correct set of plural nouns.

Answer: women, men, humans

Singular nouns can change through adding on suffixes, such as -s or -es, or they change in internal spelling, as in goose to geese. Some stay the same, like deer and moose. No mouses or mooses, please.
7. When identifying nouns, remember they can be more than one type of noun at the same time, as in "cars"--it's common, concrete, and plural. What is the noun "fire truck " in the following sentence? My brother got to sit in the fire truck during the field trip.

Answer: concrete, compound, singular

There is one fire truck, so it is singular, it is not capitalized making it common, and fire truck is more than one word for the one thing, indicating it is a compound noun.
8. How many nouns are in the sentence below? Percy drove his new car, a silver Honda, to Pennsylvania, but had a flat tire on the highway.

Answer: 6

Percy, Honda, and Pennsylvania are proper nouns. Car, tire, and highway are common nouns (singular, as well, and are concrete).
9. One important aspect of nouns is that they can be used to clarify and spice up writing. Below is a fairly boring, vague piece of writing. Which noun best replaces "small humans" in the following sentence? Small humans enjoyed the museum's exhibit on dinosaurs.

Answer: any of the choices

Children, students, or kindergarteners is much more specific, and definitely makes more sense than small humans. Each word choice reflects how specific you want to get--children is an overall better choice than small humans, otherwise we might get the idea pygmies were going to the museum for a field trip. Students is more specific than children, and kindergarteners narrows the group even further.
10. I almost forgot possessive nouns. What punctuation mark indicates the noun is possessive (in most cases)?

Answer: apostrophe

Apostrophes are used in possessives, and they are also used in contractions. That is why there is often some confusion between using its or it's. Its shows possession, while it's is the contraction for it is. But its and it's are pronouns and they are in another PAPAVINC quiz.
