Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 'The Woman In Black' was originally a novel. Who was the author of this book?

Answer: Susan Hill

Susan Hill was born in 1942, in Scarborough. She wrote 'The Woman In Black' in 1982, when she was 40, and this is her most well known book. 'The Woman In Black' is a ghost story, and the West End production's tension is even scarier than the tension in the book, along with the frightening description/acting and gripping storyline.
2. In the play, there are two characters (excluding the woman). These characters are Arthur Kipps, playing every character apart from himself, and another man who plays Arthur. What is the character's name?

Answer: You don't find out, he's simply an actor

You never find out his name as the producers thought it would add more effect to the play. It is very clever how the characters in the play are producing a play of Arthur's story, and it is clever how they randomly stop the story for a lighting check or something like that.
3. There is one main setting in the play, which is featured in the show in every scene apart from the first few. What is this setting called?

Answer: A house called Eel Marsh House

Eel Marsh House is very large and almost all black. Most of the rooms are open, but there are the mysterious few that are locked. These come in to effect and understanding throughout the play.
4. Arthur Kipps has to attend one of his business' clients at her funeral. What is the name of this client?

Answer: Mrs Alice Drablow

Mrs Alice Drablow lived in the small, mysterious village of Crythin Gifford. As her solicitors, the company Arthur works for needed someone from their business to represent the company at her funeral, and then to go to her house and search through all her papers, for anything important.
5. At the funeral, Arthur sees the woman for the first time. He sees the woman again, at which place on Mrs Drablow's site?

Answer: The burial ground

In the play, this bit is quite frightening as she appears out of nowhere very suddenly, but then disappears again just as she is seen. It's as if she flashes across the stage, in front of Arthur.
6. There is one VERY scary part of the play and the book, the chapter called 'In The Nursery'. This question is on the beginning of the scene, in the play. Does the door to the nursery open by itself?

Answer: Yes

This is a very scary and sudden part of the play. Arthur has been trying to sleep when he hears a strange, continuous noise from upstairs. He gets up and goes cautiously, upstairs. Arthur approaches the door, and as he turns the doorknob, a scream echoes through the theatre so suddenly it makes you jump. Arthur is so shocked by the scream he does not open the door and as he turns away, it creaks open slowly on its own accord.
7. In Crythin Gifford, there is one main path that leads to every area of the village. It also known as a raised road, across low or wet ground. What is this type of road called?

Answer: A causeway

The causeway is a very important part of the book/play as quite a few mysterious, strange and of course, frightening happenings take place on the Crythin Gifford causeway.
8. There is a dog in the book and play, but they don't actually use a dog. You have to imagine it is there. By not actually using one, it's very effective. What is the name of the dog?

Answer: Spider

Spider is Mr Daily's dog. He follows Arthur around and experiences some dangerous encounters with him.
9. Arthur finds out that the woman, Jennet Humfrye, had a child. What did she name this child?

Answer: Nathaniel

Nathaniel Humfrye was two years old when he was killed in the pony and trap accident, along with his nursemaid and the Drablows. His mother later died of heart failure.
10. Did Arthur's own son die at the end?

Answer: Yes

Unfortunately, once he and Stella have their own child, he sees the woman and they both get killed. However, he gets re-married later.
