Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are most of the Companions?

Answer: reincarnated Heralds

This is hinted at throughout the novels, but especially in the Mage Storms trilogy, in which we are told that the Companions, other than those that are Grove-born, are Heralds that have chosen to come back. Grove-born Companions, however, have never been human before.
2. What was the name of Karal's Firecat in the Mage Storms trilogy?

Answer: Altra

Interestingly enough, Firecats are the Karsite equivalent of Companions. Rather than being former priests, the Firecats are former Sons of the Sun, which accounts for the fact that there are many less Firecats than Companions.
3. Urtho, the Mage of Silence, is known for his magical constructs, the Gryphons. In the Mage Wars trilogy, we are told of a little "misborn" Gryphon who had extremely powerful mindspeech. What was her name?

Answer: Kechara

Kechara was Urtho's first expedition into a different type of Gryphon, one suited to more delicate tasks, such as those of a trondi'irn. Kechara had incredibly strong mindspeech, which is how "Papa Skan" found her. Skandranon and Zhaneel adopted Kechara.
4. What was the name of the dyheli who carried Firesong to Valdemar, and then to Urtho's tower?

Answer: Brytha

Brytha was a white dyheli stag. He also carried Firesong when he arrived in the vale, because it was snowing, the landscape was white, and Firesong, the peacock that he is, showed up bedecked in white, with his white hair shining, his white firebird, and the white dyheli stag.
5. What type of bird is the banner of clan Tale'sedrin, Tarma and Kethry's clan?

Answer: Vorcel-hawk

When Tarma took Kethry back to the plains to clan Liha'arden, there were several skeptics that said Kethry was of OutClan blood, and couldn't be the seed of Tale'sedrin. The goddess, who had blessed Tarma and Kethry's she'enedren bond, sent a great Vorcel-hawk to them as a sign to Liha'arden that she accepted Kethry as a means to revive Tale'sedrin.
6. What was the name of the Companion that bonded (not Chose) with Karal, and was lost in the last Mage Storm?

Answer: Florian

Florian bonded with Karal on the suggestion of all the Companions. They supported Karal when the Council was turning against him, and they thought he needed someone to help him. Florian and Karal shared a very close relationship, one that could not have been any closer unless Florian Chose Karal.
7. When in the Pelagirs, Kethry decided to call a familiar. When the familiar arrived, it immediately bonded with Tarma instead of Kethry, saying that Tarma needed it while Kethry didn't. Who and what was this familiar?

Answer: Warrl the kyree

Warrl, or as Tarma usually called him, Fur Face, was a neuter kyree from the Pelagirs. Kyree are creatures that look similar to a cross between a cat and a wolf. They come in three genders, male, female and neuter, and were created by Urtho during the Mage-Wars, along with dyheli, tervardi, and gryphons.
8. What was the name of the lizard that became a White Winds Adept?

Answer: Gervase

Gervase was transformed into a mage for saving the life of a man who was a mage. Gervase's home was full of magic, and in payment for saving his life, the mage drained the magic from his home, and gave it to Gervase. Gervase established a White Winds School.
9. What was the name of the magical sword (or geas-blade) that was passed down from the mage Kethry to her granddaughter Kerowyn, from Kerowyn to Princess Elspeth, from Elspeth to the Changechild Nyara, from Nyara to Firesong, and eventually destroyed in the final Mage Storm?

Answer: Need

At first we aren't told much about Need, except that she feels a strong need to aid women. Kethry often calls her a geas-blade, but that isn't exactly the case. Need used to be a woman, a mage-smith, many years before the Cataclysm. During a crisis, she set a spell on a sword and fell on it, trapping her soul in the sword. During the final Mage Storm when Firesong was her bearer, the power of the storm was enough to make her explode into molten metal, which is what burned Firesong's face. Karal and Andesha encountered her soul on the Moonpaths.
10. Who was the Black Gryphon?

Answer: Skandranon

Skandranon was one of the greatest of Urtho's Gryphons. If it weren't for Skan and Amberdrake, Gryphons probably wouldn't have survived after the Cataclysm, because Urtho had them magically protected against breeding. Skan wasn't always black, though. After gating away from Ka'venusho, Skandranon had turned white from the massive amount of magic energy.
