Anne Radcliffe (neé Ward) was born 1764 in London. She began writing two months after she married. Her most famous novel was "The Mysteries of Udolpho" about a woman who was locked in a castle and forced to marry a man she didn't love because of her aunt and uncle.

Mary Shelley (neé Wollstonecraft) was born in 1797. Her most famous novel was "Frankenstein" which came about from a nightmare. The book was written in nine months and the author was anonymous. In 1823, "Frankenstein" was published again with Mary's name as author. "Frankenstein" tells the story of Doctor Frankenstein creating a monster of whom he loses control.

Regina Roche (neé Dalton) was born in 1764. Her most famous horror novel was "The Children of the Abbey" about a brother and sister who no longer have their inheritance thanks to a fake will and the sister falls in love with one man while being stalked by another.

Mary Radcliffe (neé Clayton) was born in 1746. Her first horror novel was titled "Manfroné" or "One-Handed Monk". The story revolved around a woman who was attacked one night by a stranger who loses his hand while escaping. The same stranger then begins to stalk her.

Charlotte Dacre (neé King) was born in 1771. Charlotte chose the last name of Dacre because it made her sound more aristocratic. Her second book "Zofloya" was considered to be horror because of its pornography and the fact that it was the female version of Matthew Lewis's "The Monk".

Elizabeth Gaskell (neé Stevenson) was born in 1810. Her short horror story "The Old Nurse's Story" told the tale of a seventeen year old Hester who moves into a haunted mansion with young Rosamond to take care of her after Rosamond's parents die.

Charlotte Riddell (neé Cowan) was born in 1832. Charlotte wrote under the pseudonym F.G. Trafford before writing under her husbands name Mrs. J.H. Riddell. One of her short horror stories "Nut Bush Farm" is about a farmer who meets a ghost that has returned to the farm he once owned to find the person that killed him.

Amelia Edwards was born in 1831. She wrote the short horror story "The Story of Salome" about a man falling in love with a ghost at the cemetery where she visits her own grave.

Anne Rice (neé O'Brien) was born in 1941. She has written a series of Christian fiction, but is best known for her horror series of stories about vampires starting with "Interview With A Vampire". Her interest came about after the death of her daughter.

Shirley Jackson was born in 1916. She suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and wrote as a way to make money. In 1959, Shirley wrote "The Haunting of Hill House" about a group of people invited to a mansion that has paranormal activity.
