Estimated time: 3 mins.
Jacob Marley, Scrooge's former business partner, is dead, as we learn in the first sentence of the story. His ghost appears on Christmas Eve to warn Scrooge and the readers about what's coming.
2. Gets a surprise Christmas visitor
Answer: Fred
That visitor is none other than his Uncle Ebenezer. Scrooge has changed his attitude and drops by Fred's Christmas gathering as a step toward establishing a relationship with his nephew.
3. Gets a pay raise
Answer: Bob Cratchit
Scrooge informs his employee he's going to raise his salary. He does this after appearing to be ready to punish Cratchit for arriving late to work the morning after Christmas. Cratchit does not see Scrooge on Christmas Day, so he doesn't know Scrooge has undergone a transformation until the following day.
4. Takes Scrooge to school
Answer: Ghost of Christmas Past
The Ghost of Christmas Past takes Scrooge to several scenes involving his younger self. The first of these flashbacks is at Scrooge's old school. He witnesses his sister arrive to tell his younger self he is going home. The school scene gives readers probably the first indication that the adult Scrooge is seeing the error of his ways.
5. As good as gold
Answer: Tiny Tim
The Ghost of Christmas Present shows Scrooge the Christmas festivities in the Cratchit household. Bob Cratchit reports to his wife that Tiny Tim was "as good as gold" that morning. Cratchit adds that Tim remarked he hoped the people saw him in the church, and that his disability would remind them of "who made lame beggars walk, and blind men see." Witnessing the way the Cratchits celebrate Christmas despite their difficult circumstances makes a powerful impression on Scrooge.
6. Ditches Scrooge
Answer: Belle
The Ghost of Christmas Past shows Scrooge the moment his would-be wife ends their relationship. Belle notices Scrooge is not the same person he was when they first fell in love, and she essentially tells him she's had enough. Scrooge is then forced to witness a scene involving Belle with her husband and kids.
He is reminded of how his life woulda/coulda/shoulda looked if he hadn't become such a jerk.
7. Doesn't speak
Answer: Ghost of Christmas Future
The last of the spirits to visit Scrooge never says a word, but it shows Scrooge a future that will be very grim if he doesn't change his ways. Scrooge's journey to the future is the coup de grace that cements his desire to change.
8. Scrooge's favorite boss
Answer: Fezziwig
During his time with the Ghost of Christmas Past, Scrooge looks in on a Christmas party attended by his younger self. The host was Mr. Fezziwig, for whom Scrooge worked during an apprenticeship. Scrooge's fond memories of his jovial former employer stir his emotions.
9. Reluctantly prays for Scrooge
Answer: Mrs. Cratchit
Mrs. Cratchit is not in the mood to include Scrooge in her family's Christmas dinner prayers because of his mistreatment of Bob Cratchit. She calls Scrooge "an odious, stingy, hard, unfeeling man." (Tell us how you really feel, Mrs. Cratchit.) Bob convinces her to pray for Scrooge because it's Christmas. She consents for Bob's sake, not Scrooge's.
10. Scrooge's fellow apprentice
Answer: Dick Wilkins
Dick serves as an apprentice under Fezziwig along with Scrooge in Scrooge's younger days. It is implied that Dick is a fan of Fezziwig as much as Scrooge is.
