When Zoey was walking to her car after everyone had left school, Dustin and Drew, two of Heath's football team mates, drove up next to Zoey so Heath could talk to Zoey. When he finally saw her Mark, and after Dustin and Drew saw it, they drove away but Heath, sitting on the tailgate, fell off. They backed the truck up, grabbed Heath and drove away, telling Zoey to stay away from him.

When Zoey woke up in the infirmary at the House of Night, everything was explained to her by Neferet and Grandma Redbird: how she got there, what happened, and why/how her Mark was filled in. When Neferet announced that Zoey had to go to the dorms, Grandma Redbird was worried about Zoey. To make her feel at ease, Neferet pledged to be Zoey's mentor.

She climbed the tree and got the cat to come to her, and realized that it was the same cat from a dream she had. She named the cat Nala because she reminded her of a lioness.

After the spirits were sent back to their graves, Zoey confronted Aphrodite and said that she no longer had any reign over anyone at the House of Night, and that the Dark Daughters were no longer hers. Aphrodite called her a bad name, and said that only a High Priestess could give or take away the Dark Daughters. Neferet showed up as soon as she said that and took the Dark Daughters pendant from Aphrodite and gave it to Zoey, along with the leadership of the Dark Daughters.
