Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Blade Runner" was the first movie based on a work by Philip K. Dick. Harrison Ford is a retired policeman, who gets back to work to hunt androids (called "Replicants"). Which novel of Dick's is this masterpiece by Ridley Scott based on?

Answer: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

"Blade Runner" came out in summer of 1982, a few months after Philip K. Dick's death. It was a true aesthetic masterpiece, and received many awards over time. A more dark and philosophized "Director's Cut" came out ten years later, in 1992.
2. Paul Verhoeven directed "Total Recall", starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone. Which of Dick's short stories inspired "Total Recall"?

Answer: We Can Remember It for You Wholesale

Arnold played Douglas Quaid, a worker who had mysterious dreams about Mars. He decided to visit Mars, despite his wife's (played by Sharon Stone) objections. A usual concept in Philip K. Dick's works is implanted/erased memories and man's worries about his true identity.
3. Christian Duguay directed "Screamers", starring Peter Weller, based on what Dick short story?

Answer: Second Variety

The screamers were small robots manufactured to assist humans in a civil war in outer space colonies. They soon evolved and constructed their own personalities. A film with the true feeling of Philip K. Dick work, another one dealing with identity worries.
4. Steven Spielberg directed Tom Cruise and Colin Farrell in "Minority Report", based on which Dick short story?

Answer: The Minority Report

Tom Cruise played John Anderton, head of the futuristic "PreCrime" police department. "PreCrime" used advanced technologies, based on reports by three oracles, to arrest future criminals before they commit their crimes. An excellent futuristic thriller by Steven Spielberg.
5. Gary Fleder directed "Impostor", starring Gary Sinise, Madeleine Stowe, Vincent D'Onofrio and Tony Shahloub, based on Philip K. Dick's short story of the same name.

Answer: True

In a future war between Earth and Alpha Centauri, aliens killed Spencer Olham (played by Gary Sinise), a designer of Earth government weapons, and his wife (played by Madeleine Stowe) and took their bodies. They also took their whole existence, because they are unaware who they really are. Another great allegory about human identity and existence by Philip K. Dick.
6. Which John Woo-directed film was based on Dick's short story of the same name and starred Ben Affleck, Uma Thurman and Aaron Eckhart?

Answer: Paycheck

Ben Affleck played Michael Jennings, a top class engineer who erased his own memory for security reasons and had trouble to get it back. Another memory-identity-personality game by Philip K. Dick.
7. Richard Linklater directed "A Scanner Darkly", an animated film based on Philip K. Dick's short story with the same name. In what way was this film exceptional?

Answer: It was first filmed with real actors and then animated over that footage

Another major concept in Philip K. Dick's works was drugs and substances. This dark animated film, starring Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder and Robert Downey, Jr., tells about a future where the majority of the people are addicts of the "Substance D". Keanu Reeves played Bob Arctor, an undercover police officer with orders to infiltrate the addicts in attempt to find the drug suppliers.
8. Lee Tamahori directed Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore and Jessica Biel in "Next", loosely based on what Philip K. Dick short story?

Answer: The Golden Man

9. Alan Simon directed "Radio Free Albemuth", based on Dick's short story with the same name. What is the name of the supernatural entity involved in that story?

Answer: VALIS

VALIS (Vast Active Living Intelligence System) was a supernatural entity based on religious experiences of Philip K. Dick himself. It inspired a trilogy of novels: "The Divine Invasion", "VALIS" and "The Owl in Daylight".
10. Matt Damon stars in "The Adjustment Bureau", based on what Philip K. Dick's short story?

Answer: Adjustment Team

Matt Damon played Richard Norris, a congressman running for senator. He met a beautiful girl and went after her, breaking his agenda. He discovered then that he was under total surveillance by "The Adjustment Bureau", a group of mysterious people who coordinated his entire life.
