While travelling, an aquifer erupts and fills the valley with water, which freezes to ice. Frank Chalmers is killed during this journey, while trying to free the rover from a rock.

The last remaining members of the group of 100 finally make it to the hidden colony buried underneath an ice dome in the south polar region. This ends the first book, and is where the second book, "Green Mars", will begin.
