Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the spacecraft that takes the first group of colonists to the planet Mars?

Answer: Ares

The spaceship Ares takes the first 100 colonists to the planet Mars, where they will build the first colony and infrastructure for later humans to use.
2. While the primary mission of the first 100 will be setting up the first colony on Mars, Arkady Bogdanov will take a small group from the crew to work on a secondary mission. What is this secondary mission?

Answer: Developing a Space Station on the moon Phobos.

Arkady leads his team on the mission to setup a space station on the moon of Phobos which orbits much closer to Mars than Earth's moon. Phobos will be the gateway to Mars.
3. Throughout the book, one of the first 100 is consistently the most resistant to terraforming activities on Mars. Name this character.

Answer: Ann Clayborne

Ann Clayborne is the lead geologist on the mission, and strongly wishes Mars to remain as close to its natural state as possible. She consistently opposes most terraforming efforts.
4. Which of the below choices is NOT a method of terraforming Mars used in this book?

Answer: Shifting of Mars into a closer orbit around the sun to add heat to the atmosphere.

All of the above methods are used except for shifting Mars into a closer orbit. By the end of the first book the effects of the terraforming are beginning to take place.
5. What architectural development helps to increase exporting of raw materials, and importing of miners and transnational/UN security forces to Mars?

Answer: Space Elevator

The building of the Space Elevator, along the equator of Mars, eliminates the need for wasting precious fuel breaking out of, and entering the atmosphere. However, later in the story it becomes an object of anger for many Mars colonists who are rebelling against the incoming transnat (private contractor) security forces.
6. Which main character is assassinated at about the midpoint of the story?

Answer: John Boone

John Boone is assassinated by a group working with Frank Chalmers to push their agenda on Mars. Frank takes over the leadership and communication with the controlling interests back on Earth.
7. A revolution breaks out on Mars against the UNOMA and transnational corporate security forces. While there are several groups revolting, who is considered the main leader of the revolution?

Answer: Arkady Bogdonov

Arkady Bogdonov leads the primary revolution on Mars. He has long argued for Mars to have its own agenda, separate from UN control. He is eventually killed during an air attack on his colony from the moon of Phobos.
8. According to the book, it is very difficult to destroy a Martian town.

Answer: False

It is actually very easy to destroy a Martian town. Every town has a tent or dome protecting it from the harsh environment. Once the tent is punctured the deadly Martian atmosphere will kill everyone not protected.
9. A group of the last few remaining members of the first 100 escape the Cairo colony just as the UN forces attack. What do they escape in?

Answer: Stealth rovers

The crew escapes in stealth rovers, supplied by members of the hidden colony. They need to traverse the entire length of the Valeris Marineris to an emergency station for supplies. While travelling, an aquifer erupts and fills the valley with water, which freezes to ice. Frank Chalmers is killed during this journey, while trying to free the rover from a rock.
10. Where is the hidden colony located?

Answer: South polar region

The last remaining members of the group of 100 finally make it to the hidden colony buried underneath an ice dome in the south polar region. This ends the first book, and is where the second book, "Green Mars", will begin.
