7. In "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers, who was the central character that all the others talked to about their troubles?

Answer: John Singer, a deaf-mute

The novel's original title was "The Mute", and portrays several lonely people in a small southern U.S. town in the late 1930s. Brannon, Copeland, Kelly, and also Jake Blount, a blustery radical, all confide in John Singer. Although he can neither hear them, nor can he offer words of advice and solace, they all seem to find comfort in the one-sided conversations.

Carson McCullers' insights into the human soul, at a young age (she was 23 when she wrote this, her first novel), are considered remarkable by many critics.
