"The Subtle Knife" Quiz Part Two

A Tartar tells Lee that the sky has opened before, many generations ago. Many other worlds are accessible through the sky. The Tartar says that there is going to be a spirit war. Lee kills a Skraeling who tries to attack him. He accuses Lee of being an enemy of the church. Lee takes the Skraeling's ring from him.

The witches are looking for Lyra. They see Spectres attacking adults. There is no defence against Spectres, only children are unharmed. The angels who the witches encounter are also going to Lord Asriel. They want to assist Lord Asriel with the war that is coming.

Lyra goes to see Doctor Malone again in Will's Oxford. The police are with Doctor Malone, they want to ask Lyra a few questions. Lyra accidentally mentions Will which gives her away. She manages to escape from them, and the old man who she met in the museum gives her a lift. When Lyra returns to Cittágazze, she realises that Sir Charles has stolen her alethiometer.

Will and Lyra go to see Sir Charles together, Will is determined to get the alethiometer back. Sir Charles wants something in exchange however. He believes there is a man in the Torre degli Angeli tower, in Cittágazze. This man has a knife and Sir Charles wants it. Lyra realises that she had seen Sir Charles at Mrs. Coulter's cocktail party, but he was calling himself Lord Boreal at the time.

The Torre degli Angeli is translated as the Tower of Angels. In the tower is the curly haired red-headed man who Lyra has glimpsed before. His name is Tullio, the brother of two children in Cittágazze. He is definitely mad; he has a knife and it looks as if he is dancing with it. Giacomo Paradisi was once the bearer of the knife.

Will manages to get the knife from Tullio, but he loses two fingers in the process. Tullio is attacked by the Spectres and killed. Will is now the bearer of the knife - or the Subtle Knife. The loss of Will's fingers is proof, according to Paradisi. The knife can cut into other worlds as well as any earthly materials.

Lyra and Will return to Sir Charles's home to get the alethiometer. Lyra and Pan are on watch, while Will enters the house with the help of the knife. However, Sir Charles has got a visitor - Mrs. Coulter

Lyra and Will eavesdrop on Sir Charles and Mrs. Coulter. Mrs Coulter says that Lord Asriel is gathering an army. Sir Charles, like many others, is enchanted by Mrs Coulter's beauty.

Lee finds Doctor Grumman. He is a shaman - a sort of scholar. Doctor Grumman is really John Parry, Will's father. He plans to help Lord Asriel, and he knows all about the Subtle Knife.

He gives Lee the ring and swears an oath. He promises to help Lee to find Lyra. Lee and John Parry sail away in the hot-air balloon.
