Crunch is concerned that his young ogre may be harmed in the storm, so Dor and Grundy offer to help. Dor questions the inanimate while Grundy questions living things. Crombie's talent is pointing to things but he was not actually present and Humfrey charges a year service for any answer, a somewhat high price to pay to locate the missing ogre.

Dor spoke to the water and had it fool the Triton, allowing him and Grundy to sneak by. He then fooled the Needle Cactus into believing he was a fireman and Grundy was a hot gog and they really didn't want to burn the Cactus unless they had to. The Gorgon was the last obstacle, which Dor faced bravely, thus gaining entrance.

Answer: He used a cobweb to translate

Jumper, whose real name was Phidippus Variegatus, belonged to the Salticidae family, a family of spiders, so using a cobweb made perfect sense. The sword spoke the language of war while the scabbard spoke the language of peace; neither would have been much help.

All of the above mentioned items were already in the Hoorah's collection, as well as ice cream cones, dead fish, a collection of brass bound books, polished werewolf droppings, an hourglass and purple, round, oblong, and green eggs. It seems the Hoorah was a collector of pretty much everything.

Due to an ongoing battle with the Goblins and an ancient curse there were at this time no male Harpies. They recruited suitable males and used them as mates. The Queen believed Dor to be an excellent choice, being totally unaware of the fact that he was a 12 year old boy from the future inhabiting a Mundane warrior for only a short period of time.

Answer: To cause things to go wrong

Murphy is not really an evil magician, his talent simply makes circumstances go wrong at the worst possible moment. The Storm King who ruled before Dor was born controlled weather and the Zombie Master had no interest in politics.

Answer: Millie uses her talent

Due to the nature of his work the Zombie Master is an outsider and chooses to remain that way. He has no interest in politics and could care less who wins the upcoming war. He is, however, still a man, and thus he is not immune to Millie's talent, which is sex appeal. She asks him to please help and even though he knows it's her talent influencing him he cannot resist.

The Lord of the Jungle is excited at the prospect of allowing his minions to attack the Mundanes, as the monsters pretty much all hate men. He is, however, cautious of upsetting King Roogna and causing retributions to occur. Dor thus sends a message to Roogna asking him to allow the monsters to destroy the Mundanes, and although Murphy's talent almost messes things up, eventually it all works as planned.

Answer: Nymphs

The valley is populated by the most carefree creatures of Xanth: naiads which are lake nymphs, dryads which associate with trees, and oreads who love the mountain ranges. The nymphs are so carefree that a day after being attacked by goblins they have completely forgotten it even happened. Dor and Jumper reason that the valley should provide no harm or hindrance to the Zombie Master and his army of zombies.

Jumper, being a spider, has a much shorter life span than Dor who is human. While this upsets Dor immensely Jumper explains that to him the time left is still a great amount of time and he will have plenty of living yet to do.

Answer: A magic confusion spell

Dor actually uses the flute to lure the goblins into the Gap Chasm, where he detonates a forget spell causing the enemies to forget why they were there in the first place (this provides a profound and lasting implication on Xanth from hence on). The magic ring turned out to have some interesting properties of its own later.

Dor convinces the Coral to release Harold and as there have been no male harpies for many, many years, once all of the female harpies see him they have no further interest in attacking Castle Roogna.

Vadne was jealous of the attention the Zombie Master gave to Millie so she decided to remove her rival and transformed her into something she thought no one would ever find. She actually refused to tell Dor and Roogna what she had done so she was banished into the magic ring and put into storage by the Brain Coral.

Interestingly enough, Dor's father, Bink, actually finds the book, titled "The Skeleton in the Closet", 800 years in the future.

The Zombie Master actually hung himself and had it set up so he'd become a zombie. He left Castle Roogna and wasn't seen again for some time...
