Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A blonde woman in a white bikini emerges from the sea onto a Caribbean beach. In which of these movies is this an iconic scene?

Answer: Dr No

Made in 1962 from Ian Fleming's 1958 book of the same name, 'Dr No', is the first appearance of Sean Connery as James Bond, 007. After a colleague is killed, Bond ends up in Jamaica investigating the threat, posed by Dr Julius No (Joseph Wiseman) to the American space programme. Ursula Andress plays Honey Ryder and her first sighting is in THAT beach scene.

She emerges singing 'Underneath The Mango Tree', and is much appreciated by Bond, at that time hiding on the shoreline. The movie also introduces CIA agent Felix Leiter,(Jack Lord) who, confusingly, seems to change race as the James Bond franchise develops. Soon after his arrival in Jamaica, Bond almost meets his maker courtesy of a poisonous spider released into his bed. Bond sneaks onto Dr No's mysterious island, but is captured. Though placed in a cell, he escapes through the air vents and manages to scupper Dr No's plans of launching a missile to knock down an American spacecraft. 'Dr No' was placed at number 8 in a list of 'The 50 best beach scenes in the movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008, from which all these questions were suggested.
2. A group of athletes runs along a beach to the haunting sound of music. From which movie is this a slow-motion scene?

Answer: Chariots Of Fire

Vangelis provided the music for the 1981 movie, which was based on the true story of British athletes preparing for the 1924 Olympics. It revolves around the true story of two athletes, one Jewish and the other a devout Christian who have to battle not only competitors on the track, but also find themselves tested in other ways. Harold Abraham, (actor Ben Cross) has to contend with anti-Semitism while Eric Liddle (Ian Charleson) faces the conflict of his Christian faith and the demands of his sport when he has to compete on a Sunday.
The film was nominated for seven Academy Awards, and won four, including 'best picture'.
'Chariots Of Fire was placed at number 2 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
3. There's something in the water that's causing fear and panic on a popular holiday beachfront. First, the body of a woman turns up on the beach and then the terror spreads Which movie features a scene in which dozens of holidaymakers flee the sea for the safety of the beach?

Answer: Jaws

Roy Schieder, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss star in the story of what happens when a giant shark threatens a popular holiday seafront. It is left to an old seadog (Shaw) a local cop (Schieder) and a marine biologist (Dreyfuss) to find a way of stopping it.
Directed by Stephen Spielberg and released in 1975, 'Jaws' won three Academy awards (best film, best music, and best sound).
'Jaws' was placed at number 7 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
4. Children sit gathered around an old sea dog on an American beach. "Almost midnight", he declares, "Time for one more story". From which horror movie is this the opening dialogue?

Answer: The Fog

Set in a North California fishing village about to celebrate 100 years of existence, the movie, which stars Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh, John Houseman and Tom Atkins, tells of what happens when a fog flows in from the sea bringing horror with it. What those preparing to celebrate do not realise is that 100 years earlier, a boat capsized on that same shore in a fog, killing all, and the people from that boat - in zombie form - are about to come ashore to seek revenge for being lured to their deaths.
Made in 1980 and directed by John Carpenter, who also wrote the screenplay and composed the music,
'The Fog' was placed at number 34 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
5. Name the movie in which this scene appears. A king and a church leader meet on horseback on a windswept beach to make plans to circumvent the strictures of the Church Of Rome. The king is hoping his friend will make a good ally and take his side on all issues, but the friend takes his duties seriously and will not go against his conscience. Who will rid me of the idea that this movie provides one of the best beach scenes ever?

Answer: Becket

Richard Burton starred as Thomas a Becket and Peter O'Toole as King Henry II in the 1964 movie directed by Peter Glenlive. The Internet Movie Data Base describes 'Becket' as: "A violently emotional drama that probes the changing relationship between two young men". The movie is based on historical facts surrounding the King of England and his Archbishop of Canterbury, in which friendship turns to apathy and ends in murder. It is told in flashback form with the king recalling how his high hopes had turned to tragedy and how his friend had not done enough to assist him.
The relationship was characterised by that great "Who will rid me of this turbulent priest?" quote.
'Becket' was placed at number 50 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
6. A drunken man lies fully clothed on a beach when a naked woman appears, kisses him tenderly, and disappears into the sea. From which movie is this tale (or should that be tail) taken?

Answer: Splash

Made in 1984, 'Splash' stars Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah in the story of boy meets girl, only to find that the girl is actually a mermaid. As a young boy Allen Baeur (Hanks) had been saved from drowning by a mermaid. Then, years later, the same mermaid saves him again. Comic adventures follow as the mermaid searches for her hero in New York - her tail turning into legs as long as it/they are dry, but if they/it get wet, then trouble follows. And while they are intent on love, others want to make her into a freak show. 'Splash' was placed at number 38 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
7. A prisoner escapes, makes a clean getaway after an ingenious prison break and heads for Mexico where, years later, a former prison pal tracks him down. Which movie features this final, wordless, reunion scene?

Answer: The Shawshank Redemption

Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman star in the 1994 adaptation of Stephen King's novel. Set in the 1940s, it is the story of a man (Robbins) wrongly convicted of murdering his wife and her lover and who has to come to terms with prison life and is taught the ways by an old con (Freeman). Robbins escapes, but provides clues for his friend to find him on his own release. This tale of male bonding and the triumph of hope and determination over despair and loneliness has been cited by some as one of the best movies of the latter part of the 20th century.
In 2002, 'The Shawshank Redemption' was voted the third greatest film ever made in the UK's Channel 4 '100 Greatest Film' poll and at various times it has been top of the IMDB's 'Top 250' list.
'The Shawshank Redemption' was placed at number 23 in a list of 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
8. A man tracks down his brother's killer to a polluted beach in the north east of England. They fight and one ends up being dumped with loads of coal slag into the North Sea. In which movie does this scene appear?

Answer: Get Carter

Cited by many as one of Michael Caine's best movies, he stars as Jack Carter who sets out to get revenge on the gangster who killed his brother. Carter is a gangster himself and is efficient in dealing with rivals who try to stop him getting at the truth of his brother's death.

The dramatic scene on the beach is not quite the climax of the movie, suffice to say the real climax comes as a shock to many audiences. 'Get Carter' was made in 1971 (and remade in an American setting in 2000). Initially panned by many critics, it was, however, a hit among cinemagoers.

In 2004, the magazine 'Total Film' called it "the greatest British movie in any genre". It was placed at number 10 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
9. Surfing can be fun, but probably not when you come under gunfire from an intrepid enemy. Which movie features just such a surfing scene and a commander who really loves the smell of napalm in the morning?

Answer: Apocalypse Now

Marlon Brando, Martin Sheen, Robert Duval, Harrison Ford, and Dennis Hopper are among the Hollywood heavyweights in Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 double Oscar winner. Set in war-torn Vietnam in 1969, this is the story of a US Special Forces captain (Sheen) who is sent on a mission to kill a renegade officer (Brando). Duval plays a character who orders his men to surf under enemy fire, striding into the scene to declare "I love the smell of napalm in the morning". 'Apocalypse Now' was placed at number 13 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
10. A successful movie star helps a would-be young starlet find fame in tinsel town, even though he's conscious his own career may suffer. He doesn't count on the fact, though, that when his own career founders, it will pull her down too. Which 1954 movie tells of a star who walks away into the crashing waves of the Pacific rather than drag his protégé down with him?

Answer: A Star Is Born

James Mason and Judy Garland star in the second telling of the story - some believe it to be the best. Janet Gaynor and Fredric March starred in the 1937 original, which was nominated for seven Oscars but won just one (best screenplay). In 1976, Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson starred in the second remake, which also won an Oscar (best music, original song).

In the 1976 movie, the main characters were singers, rather than actors. The 1954 version was nominated for six Oscars, but did not win any. 'A Star Is Born' was placed at number 37 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
11. A mysterious box, linked to America's atomic energy programme, is opened on a Malibu beach-front, and as the world turns white hot, a famous private detective and his secretary stumble towards the ocean looking over their shoulders in horror. From which 1955 movie is this an apocalyptic scene?

Answer: Kiss Me Deadly

Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane's private investigator hero, Mike Hammer, and Maxine Cooper is his secretary, Velda. After picking up a hitchhiker, trouble follows for Hammer. Their car is forced off the road and she dies. Trying to find out why gets Hammer into more trouble because the authorities do not want the truth to get out there.
'Kiss Me Deadly' was placed at number 43 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
12. When their friend dies, two pals take his ashes to a cliff top overlooking the ocean but as they scatter them, the ashes are blown back it into their faces. In which movie comedy of mistaken identity does this fairly absurd scene appear?

Answer: The Big Lebowski

Made in 1998 and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, the movie stars Jeff Bridges, John Goodman and Steve Buscemi as three hapless 10-pin bowlers. When Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski (Bridges) is mistaken, by gangsters, for a famous millionaire of the same name, the plot degenerates into farce as the real Lebowski's wife is kidnapped and the bowling trio are given the task of delivering the ransom. One of them ends up dead, thus prompting the cliff-top scene in which Bridges delivers a rambling eulogy. 'The Big Lebowski' was placed at number 31 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
13. A group of young mechanics sets off on a trip of a difference to deliver a double decker London bus to Athens, as part of a challenge. On the way they pick up a disparate group of passengers, including a talented American girl singer, who for some reason, is masquerading as a boy. Which adventure-strewn road trip ends with a happy party on a Greek beach?

Answer: Summer Holiday

"Were all going on a summer holiday
No more working for a week or two
Fun and laughter on a summer holiday
No more worries for me and you
For a week or two."
Released in 1963, the comedy musical 'Summer Holiday' was designed as a vehicle, if you'll pardon the pun, for the British pop singer Cliff Richard, then at the height of his early fame.
Laura Peters co-starred as the girl singer reported missing by her mother. It all serves to build her daughter's career, and the longer she stays missing, the better. As in all good boy meets girl comedy romances, boy and girl fall for each. One contributer to the Internet Movie Data Base (IMDB) sums it up thus: "Silly, dated fun with loads of cheese and no plot - but it is rather infectious and enjoyable for what it is."
'Summer Holiday' was placed at number 27 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
14. Going to the seaside can be ideal for getting away from it all, but not when the beach turns into a battle ground. Which movie features scenes of a pitched battle between rival groups of young men?

Answer: Quadrophenia

Released in 1979, and based on the 1973 rock opera of the same name by The Who, 'Quadrophenia' focuses on the 1960's rivalry in England of 'mods' and 'rockers' and culminates in a bloody battle on the shingle beach at Brighton (but doesn't the pier look lovely in the background?).

It is the story of a young boy trapped in a dull job and family life who only feels alive among his 'mod' friends. But the sworn enemies of the 'mods' are the 'rockers' and this enmity turns to violence after a long road cruise from London to Brighton. Critics hated the film at the time, but it became a cult classic.

In 2004, 'Total Film' magazine named it the 35th greatest British film of all time, and in August 2008 it was placed at number 21 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
15. Two lovers meet on a beach and, careless of the waves breaking over them - or the impending clouds of war - they kiss, and the kiss goes on, and on, and on... Which movie is this a scene from?

Answer: From Here To Eternity

THAT kiss is the defining moment of the movie, indeed it is often regarded as one of the greatest (and longest) screen kisses of all time. Burt Lancaster plays a US Army 1st Sergeant who falls in love with his commander's wife (Deborah Kerr) and they share precious moments together on an island soon to be attacked by the Japanese in WW2. The other side of the drama features a young soldier (Montgomery Clift) noted for his boxing prowess but who does not want to fight again. The commander (Phil Ober) tries everything to make him change his mind, including getting his platoon mates to make his life such hell he will capitulate. Frank Sinatra also stars as a friend of the boxer.
Fred Zinneman directed the 1953 movie, which won eight Academy Awards.
'From Here To Eternity' was placed at number 1 in 'The 50 Best Beach Scenes In The Movies', a feature in the 'Daily Telegraph', August 2008.
