Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Is Clint Briggs the first and obvious choice as a perp for the team to turn his life around?

Answer: No

The crew that Jacob Marley assembled is coming off of a successful haunting where they changed the outlook of a woman who was mean to the kids in her neighbourhood. Now, they are looking for next year's perp, and the potential person is a hotel manager in Vancouver. However, when the team is surveilling the manager, the Ghost of Christmas Present sights Clint Briggs and follows him to a Christmas tree growers convention.

Clint Briggs is the head of his PR company and convinces the growers to hire him on to increase the sales of Christmas trees by creating a negative ad campaign. Clint proposes that the purchasers of artificial trees be seen by the public as evil and the growers buy into this angle. This fascinates the Ghost of Christmas Present, the senior spirit on the team, and he wants Clint to be next year's perp.
2. The crew of spirits is in the business of turning people's lives around and having them embrace the Christmas spirit. Why is Clint Briggs rejected by Jacob Marley as a potential perp?

Answer: He is unredeemable

While the Ghost of Christmas Present is enthused about turning around Clint Briggs' life, Jacob Marley rejects the proposal outright. He shows Clint's file to the Ghost of Christmas Present and stamped right across the front of the file is the forbidding word "unredeemable". When Marley is asked why Clint is unredeemable, Marley responds that it's because Clint believes that humans, including himself, never change.

The Ghost of Christmas Present reminds Marley that there was one other unredeemable that the process was attempted on, and it worked - himself back when he was alive. When Marley is unrelenting, the Ghost of Christmas Present threatens to take an early retirement. Marley calls his bluff, but also agrees to let the Ghost of Christmas Present and the rest of the crew shift their focus to Clint Briggs.
3. When the spirit team is doing research on Clint Briggs, what unexpected event happens to the Ghost of Christmas Present?

Answer: He is seen by Kimberly, Clint's assistant

The spirit team is investigating all aspects of Clint Briggs' life and one of the people that they are keeping tabs on is Clint's assistant, Kimberly. As spirits, they are not seen of felt by any of the mortals that they are around. When Kimberly is contemplating her future at Clint's company after doing something extremely distasteful, she remarks "It's official. I'm a terrible person." In response, the Ghost of Christmas Present says, "No you're not." Kimberly turns to him and engages him in conversation, much to the Ghost of Christmas Present's surprise!

From that point on, Kimberly is able to see the Ghost of Christmas Present.
4. The spirits set out to haunt Clint Briggs like in Dickens' story "A Christmas Carol". Why can't the Ghost of Christmas Past finish her job?

Answer: She sleeps with Clint

When the spirits are doing research on Clint Briggs, the Ghost of Christmas Past (Bonnie) comments on the fact that she thinks that Clint is attractive. This is the second time the haunting has gone off-script, the fist being when Marley tries to set the scene up and Clint is dismissive of everything that Marley says.

This leaves Marley, already skeptical about the haunting, to get frustrated with the operation. The Ghost of Christmas Present quickly realizes that a drastic deviation from the plan is needed to redeem Clint Briggs.
5. What is the one memory that Clint Briggs is not dismissive of and, in fact, runs away from?

Answer: The death of his sister

Clint Briggs is dismissive of all of the memories that the spirits raise for him and, in fact, tells the Ghost of Christmas Present that they were the memories that shaped him into the person he is today. He learned that people don't change, that he should rely on himself, and that people will believe anything because they're desperate for hope.

The one memory that Clint is not willing to face is when his sister, Carrie, is in the hospital dying of cancer. This is the one memory that Clint is not initially willing to deal with and tries to run away from, actually managing to reach the spirit headquarters.

Eventually Clint goes back to watch this memory.
6. Why does Clint Briggs try to convince his niece, Wren, to release a damning video about her classmate?

Answer: She wants to be class president

Clint's brother, Owen, brings in their niece, Wren, who has a problem that they want to ask Clint to solve. While Clint is initially dismissive, Owen reminds Clint that they promised their sister, Carrie, that they would look out for her daughter. Wren wants to become class president and is running against Josh Hubbins, a very popular and decent boy in her class.

Clint relents and sends Kimberly to do a deep dive on the classmate to find something that they can use against Josh. She finds something, a very unflattering video that was deleted, and Clint tries to convince Wren to use it. Owen is against the idea but Clint tells him to be quiet and tells Wren that she's going to have to get her hands dirty.
7. What is the catchphrase that the Ghost of Christmas Present tells Clint Briggs was a Victorian insult, to which Clint responds with a song?

Answer: "Good afternoon"

When the Ghost of Christmas Present reveals that he was once Ebenezer Scrooge, he also reveals that he only lived for three weeks longer than Christmas. To this, Clint Briggs responds skeptically that there is no actual way of knowing whether Scrooge was actually redeemed because he never had the chance to show it long-term. When reminiscing in Scrooge's past, Scrooge mentions that the Victorian phrase "good afternoon" was actually a very bad insult.

Clint and Scrooge go to a local pub to drink some warm ale (which Clint thinks is disgusting) and Clint breaks out in song trying to get Scrooge to relapse and say the insulting phrase. After a few verses, Scrooge breaks down and starts flinging "good afternoon"s all over the place. This makes him question his morality.

Bangers and mash is a dish served at British pubs, and "Kiss my Dickens" is a line from the song that Clint and Scrooge sing.

In actuality, "good afternoon" was not at all an insult. Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell were playing around with the phrase and the amusing song was born.
8. When the Ghost of Christmas Present takes his retirement, what is the first modern-day advancement that amazes him?

Answer: Indoor plumbing

While any of those things may have been fascinating for the Ghost of Christmas Present to experience, the one that he first latches onto when he gets life back is the indoor plumbing (after he gets his itch scratched). When the spirits retire, they get another chance at life and the Ghost of Christmas Present, now going by the name 'Roberto', wakes up in Clint's bed.

When he gets into the shower, he is amazed by how convenient indoor plumbing and hot water makes having a shower. He vows to have a shower once a month. He is also introduced to the idea of conditioner, though he initially uses it incorrectly.
9. By trying to stop his niece from sending the damaging post out to her school community, does Clint Briggs redeem himself?

Answer: No

Clint Briggs tries to correct the action where his niece, Wren, posts a damaging video of her opponent for class president, Joshua. Clint regrets telling her to do that because in the future it is revealed to Clint that Joshua takes his own life. However, Clint is not redeemed because he says (and makes no secret of it) that he is not going to change his life or lifestyle.

Scrooge is disappointed that Clint did not get redeemed, and rethinks his own redemption. He comes to the conclusion that maybe he has not been redeemed and should not have gotten another chance at life, so he steps in front of a bus. Clint, thinking that he and Scrooge are 'bros', rushes out in front of the bus to push Scrooge out of the way. The moment before Clint is hit by the bus, everything stops and it is revealed that this one act is Clint's redemption.
10. Which is NOT part of the end scenes that help wrap up the movie?

Answer: Marley takes his retirement because he's extraneous

When Clint Briggs dies, he reconnects with his sister, Carrie. He then proposes that instead of going into the light, Marley take him on as the new Ghost of Christmas Present. A year later, Carrie has been hired as part of the spirit staff and they are expanding their operations to do multiple hauntings a year. There is one case that they are having trouble with so Clint, now in a relationship with Bonnie, decides to go consult an expert.

The expert happens to be Scrooge, now living on Earth as Roberto. He is married to Kimberly and they have a family together. Kimberly is apparently aware of the afterlife spirits and can now see Clint when he enables it. They discuss the fact that Wren has gotten into Stanford to do her Masters degree.

In the scene at the end of the credits, the spirits target the mean hotel manager, the one that they passed over to try to redeem Clint Briggs, as their next perp.
