Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
Answer:
The film version of "Moulin Rouge!" (2001) follows the story of a young man, Christian (played by Ewan McGregor), living in Paris at the turn of 20th century, who falls in love with the "Sparkling Diamond", Satine (played by Nicole Kidman), headliner at the Moulin Rouge cabaret ballroom. The movie is packed full of popular music that is expertly woven into the story as Christian, Satine, and the owner of the failing Moulin Rouge attempt to woo the favor of a wealthy patron Duke and put on the show of a lifetime.
Some of the more well known songs in the movie include: "Sparkling Diamonds" sung by Satine which includes excerpts from "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" and Madonna's "Material Girl"; the "Elephant Love Medley" sung by Satine and Christian which includes pieces of "All You Need is Love", "One More Night", "In the Name of Love", "Heroes", along with many more; and "Come What May" penned by Christian for the Moulin Rouge's new show "Spectacular Spectacular" as a way for him and Satine to secretly express their love for each other.
The song "Come What May", while first performed in the movie "Moulin Rouge!", was actually originally intended to be for a movie version of Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", and is titled with a phrase that appears in two of Shakespeare's plays, "Twelfth Night" and "Macbeth".
"Moulin Rouge!" was adapted into a stage musical which opened on Broadway in 2018 as "Moulin Rouge! The Musical". The show went on to win nine Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical (Aaron Tveit, who happened to be the only person nominated for the category), and Best Choreography. Several new songs were added in part or in full to the stage adaptation, including Katy Perry's "Firework", Sia's "Chandelier", and "Backstage Romance" inspired by Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance".
The remaining incorrect answer choices were all songs from other musicals: "I Am Here" from the musical "Come From Away", "This is Life" from "Bandstand", "Requiem" from "Dear Evan Hansen", "A Million Dreams" from "The Greatest Showman", "Wait for Me" from "Hadestown", and "Elegance" from "Hello, Dolly!".
