Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After his fight with Clementine, Joel visits her at the Barnes and Noble where she works. Describing the scene in his memory, he recalls his departure when he finds her with another, younger man. Joel leaves the bookstore behind him, but emerges in which other location?

Answer: Rob and Carrie's house

Although at this point in the disjointed narrative, when Joel comes to terms with his fight with Clementine, the director's unique style shines through. As Joel turns his back on Clem and makes his way out of the store, the lights shut off behind him, one by one, until he makes his way through the door and into Rob and Carrie's living room (the setting he never left in the first place). This seamless shift is actually the first memory recalled during the Lacuna memory-wipe, and it shows a certain fluidity of thought. For the viewer, it starts to explain the preceding events of the film; for Joel, it's a starting point.

It's at this point that Joel is handed a letter from Rob. Clementine has had her memory wiped. As he stares down at the typed note from Lacuna, Clementine's name fades away.
2. "Technically speaking, the procedure is brain damage, but it's on par with a night of heavy drinking." While creating a map of Joel's brain, Joel walks in on himself beginning the procedure with Lacuna Inc. Which of these is not used to form the map?

Answer: A dress

During Joel's appointment, he meets with his technician, Stan, who begins to map out his brain. Placed into a special chair, Stan begins by hooking up the electrodes and introducing Joel to all of the materials he brought into the office-- everything in his life that reminds him of Clementine.

This includes a snowglobe of Boston, a coffee mug with Clementine's picture on it, and a doll with the image of a skeleton on the front (also the inspiration for one of Joel's pictures of Clem). All of these, Stan says, are used to determine where his memories are in his brain.

When this memory returns in Joel's mind, he walks in on himself receiving the procedure causing an intense moment of deja vu. At the same time, however, the technicians are regulating the voltage needed for the machines performing the procedure.

As things heat up to a point where it could technically fry his mind, things become a blur; red lights streak across in front of Joel's eyesight; speech runs together. Memory overload.
3. Joel recalls the night that he and Clementine had their big fight; she leaves in a huff and he follows in his car (which she scraped along a fire hydrant). He inevitably pursues her down the street on foot but can't catch up to her. Why is this?

Answer: His memory cuts out; he runs down the street and ends up where he started.

As Joel recalls, Clementine returned home from a night out, drinking. He made a comment about her sleeping around with other guys (to get them to like her) and she left immediately. Joel's mind takes a turn at this point; with the Lacuna technicians erasing all of his memories of Clementine, he drives down the street as the memory collapses.

A car falls from the sky. He parks at a street corner and runs down the sidewalk to catch her, but comes upon his car on the opposite curb. Sure enough, Clementine is behind him, still walking away.

He runs back and forth but finds no progress; street names and shop signs begin to lose their lettering as the memory fades away, leaving Joel's mind forever.
4. During several scenes in the film, Clementine brings her boyfriends to this spot to lay on the ice and look at the sky. In Joel's memory, it's one of his happiest moments with Clem. It only serves to cause misery when Clem is literally pulled away from him by an unseen force. Where is this important location?

Answer: Charles River

The first time the viewer sees this spot is when Clem and Joel visit it upon re-meeting each other. Clem falls on the ice before they both lay down next to a large crack-- perhaps a hint at their fractured minds?
In Joel's memory, he recalls laying on the ice with Clem during the daytime; it seems to be the happiest moment; he says "I could die right now." Unfortunately, the lights go out on this memory. Illuminated by nothing more than a spotlight, Clem is pulled away into the darkness. In this moment, Joel tries to call off the procedure. Unfortunately, no one can hear him-- he's trapped in his mind. So begins Joel's attempt to flee from his memories.
Clementine later brings Patrick, one of the Lacuna technicians, out to the Charles River with her but finds herself uncomfortable with the situation. Perhaps it reminds her of something she once forgot?
5. Joel finds himself in the presence of Clementine's new boyfriend, Patrick, on more than one occasion but he can never recall what he actually looks like. In Joel's mind, what's odd about Patrick?

Answer: He can never see Patrick's face.

When Joel tries to look Patrick in the face during a memory of a Barnes and Noble visit, he walks over to him and forcibly tries to spin him around. In a notably eerie turn, Patrick's head never turns around-- his body spins without showing his face.
Later, when Dr. Mierzwiak introduces Joel to Patrick, his face ends up distorting, almost as though his memory has too little to base his appearance on.

When Joel's procedure is complete, he has no memories of him. Patrick walks up to his car to ask why he's with Clementine, but Joel is simply confused.
6. In his mind, Clementine tells Joel that he should try waking up to put an end to the procedure. What happens when he jokingly lays on the ground and tries to force his eyes to open?

Answer: His eyes open outside the memory.

To humour his memory of Clementine, Joel lays down in the orange leaves of the forest and holds his eyes open. To his surprise, however, his eyes open in his bed, surrounded by a sea of wires. This also shocks the technicians, including Dr. Mierzwiak, since it means that something seriously wrong may be happening in the dream. They're forced to sedate him and a tear rolls down his face.
Joel returns to the forest immediately after and realizes that something else needs to be done from within his mind.

This is the only time when Joel has the ability to communicate with the outside world-- he simply opens his eyes. Unfortunately, unable to speak or move, it's not enough to call the procedure to an end.
7. As Joel's memory track their way back through the history of his and Clementine's relationship, the viewer can pinpoint the timeline through Clementine's hair dye. Which of these hair colours indicates one of Joel's oldest memories of Clem?

Answer: Green

It's clear that Clementine's homemade hair colours are important to her. In the oldest memories, Clementine has green hair. This includes the first meeting on the beach in Montauk. Shortly after, she dyes her hair a fiery red; this spans the early, passionate days in their relationship. Joel specifically remembers when she dyed her hair 'Agent Orange'; he claims to love the look.

Unfortunately, this also designates the start of the end of their relationship. By the time they have their argument in the Asian restaurant, her hair is held back.

After she has her Lacuna appointment, Clementine dyes her hair a melancholy blue.
8. Clementine suggests that Joel's memories are exactly as he remembers them (go figure) so something needs to change to throw off Lacuna. Joel resolves to place Clementine into a memory where she's not meant to be. When he does this, what happens in his apartment?

Answer: It rains.

When Clementine suggests that Joel take them to an unassociated memory where they can hide until morning, he recalls a rainy day in his country home. Singing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat", they watch as it begins to rain in the apartment, just like the day in his memory.

He takes shelter under the kitchen table, just like he once did under a canopy as a child. The plan is to hide in his childhood with Clementine, even though he only met her within the past couple of years. At the same time, however, Joel is unable to dissociate his current self from his child self.
9. Joel and Clementine can only evade Lacuna for so long. Their plan to hide in unlinked memories goes down the drain, literally. Where are they when this happens?

Answer: In a sink

Joel recedes into his childhood memories, inserting Clementine into spots in his mind where she isn't meant to be. This begins when he places her into the role of his mother's friend, a position Clem seems pretty thrilled with. Joel, meanwhile, hides under the kitchen table.

In the real world, the Lacuna techs realize that Joel has gone off the map; Dr. Mierzwiak is forced to remain and see the process through. He finds Joel in a memory of himself and Clementine taking a bath in the sink. It ends abruptly when both of them are pulled down the drain.
10. Joel's last major memory of Clementine is their first meeting in Montauk. As he and Clem break into a beach house, what begins to happen to it?

Answer: It crumbles to the ground.

One of the last sequences Joel remembers is his first time seeing Clementine in Montauk. Having arrived for a party with Rob and Carrie, he ends up wandering off and speaking with her, inevitably breaking into a local beach house with her. As they discuss the possibilities and search for a drink, Joel wonders if perhaps things can change. He remembers that when he first made the memory, he ran away because he was afraid. This time, however, he decides to stay with Clementine as the house crumbles to the ground, the last of his memories diminishing. As everything comes to an end, Clementine whispers in his ear: "Meet me in Montauk."

The next day, Joel is compelled to take the train out to the beach where he meets Clementine, almost as if it's the first time.
